In my 85 f150 is a 8.8 rear end, it has limited slip but the clutches are burned out of it. I would like to replace them but i am concerned it is to big of a job for me. Has anybody out there been there been there befour and can help a guy out?
It aint too hard. First you have to pull the axle shafts, then remove the cover and take the 2 main bearings off. Then goes the pinion gear and the whole carrier with the ring gear and side gears/clutches should come out. Be sure to check the gear mesh with marking compound and add/remove pinion shims as necessary or it will burn up.
please go into detail about this marking compound. and where i would get it, how i would use it etc.
Can i buy the clutches anywhere other than ford as they want a lot of money for them. also what kind of oil should i run in the rear end? I heard something about an additive.
Markin' compund usually comes with a rearend rebuild kit. If you cant find the clutches you need at a good price, you could just go ahead and upgrade it to a detroit or other limited slip. Summit racings got em and so does alot of 4 wheeler shops like 4wheelparts. If its a factory limited slip, you might try jcwhitney or lmctruck.
Oh yeah, you do need to run a limited slip additive. Some bottles of 80-90w gear oil comes with the additive. Gotta read the bottle. I have a friend who put a 9 inch rearend with 4.56 gears and a posi into his Bronco. He dumped the clutch at 6 grand and blew the carrier up. You gotta make sure you got the right mesh between the ring and pinion by checking with the marking compound and adding/taking out shims or other parts that change the mesh. Read the friggin instructions and it should be a 2 or 3 hour job.
