460 out of boat
hello all,
have an opportunity to buy a 460 for a couple of hundred bucks from a "buddy".....it is coming out of a boat though....the engine was machined at a reputable machine shop in Burbank, CA...and supposedly pulled 500+ hp....
my question is since it's coming out of the boat....what kind of prep work am I lookin' at????----I'll have to find a tranny to drop in also....
----oh, and he doesn't know what year the engine is/came out of.....

Boat engines are also higher RPM engines than truck engines, built to run on dirty nasty crappy fuel, so you have an advantage in that the boat engine will resist detonation better than a factory truck engine, but you might not like that it makes its power much higher in the RPM band than a truck engine.
But those last comments are based on "typical" boat engine building, and not necessarily what your friend has. Its one of those "it all depends" type answers, but I gave you a generalization that may help you with this decision.
If the boat manifolds come with it, and are cast iron, I'd be interested in them

little chance of it having freeze damage since your in SoCal
my buddy's got a 460 in his jet boat. that things nasty inside. fresh water only but the passages still get gunk-ed up pretty good.
you'll also have to find everything to go with, water pump, backing plate ect..
could be a good deal though, depending how it's built.
