Hey guys. Im havin trouble getting my 460 timed rite. Its set at 12 btc, and its still runnin like @#$@. Should i pull the vacume hose off the dizzy and set the timing again. Im kind of lost and not really sure what to do?????? Thanks Guys Matt
Matt, whenever you set the initial (lead) timing, always do so with the vacuum advance hose pulled off and PLUGGED. The reason you want to disconnect and plug it is so there is no chance of the vacuum advance "coming in" and affecting your settings. The reason for plugging the hose is to prevent a vacuum leak otherwise which would raise your idle speed and possibly cause your mechanical advance to kick in. Make sure your idle is under 900 RPM or the mechanical advance could come into play.
You say it runs like #@&%#$. What are the symptoms? Does it detonate upon acceleration? Does it run rough?
One thing, go back to basics to rule out the simple things. Wires in the right order, plugs good, comp. good. cap and rotor in good shape, coil is giving good hot spark. Prob you have already done this but worth a mention.
should there be full or ported vaccum at ditributor?
ive had my vac adv on a full vacuum port for years with out problems, but ive read different stories on FTE that made me want to switch to a ported vacuum off the upper part of the carb, from what they say it should work better because of how the vacuum reacts when you hit the throttle, if its on a full vaccum, the vacuum drops when the throttle is hit, if its on a ported line on the upper part of a carb, the vacuum rises when the throttle is hit, im gonna change to a ported line when i find a different metering block for my holley........
