Is it okay to use antiseize compound on wheel studs. I have read that some guys use it with no problems. Others say not to use it. What should I believe?
My understanding is if you use oil or antisieze on the lugs, when you torque them, you do not get the proper torque.
I have never used anything on my lugs and had no problem removing the nuts, especially since I regularly rotate the tires. As for rust, I don't remember seeing it on any of my trucks. Even the 90 I had with 160k miles on it.
imo, if there is one thing you don't want coming off, its your lugnuts. I used to work in a tire shop and saw some with and without and both seemed to stay tight. I wouldn't.
Wheel lugnut torque is usually specified for clean, unlubricated studs. Antisieze lubricant would cause the studs to tighten (strain) a bit more for a given torque. I think the number is something like 10% less torque needed for a lubricated fastener when compared to an unlubricated one.
I have always used antisieze on wheel studs and any other threaded fastener that could get corroded. So far this has worked OK.
I used it on my lugs on the front of my truck after I did a brake job. Then I had second thoughts about it. I guess I will leave it on for now, but I will keep a close eye on them to make sure they stay tight.
