1985 F-250; Flatbed?

The bed on my recently-purchased F-250 is eaten up with rust. The cab is in perfect condition... It's just the bed.

I thought instead of trying to repair and/or replace the existing bed, I would just purchase a new "basic" flatbed and have it installed. What do you guys think?

The link below shows you what I have my eyes set on;

http://www.turnoverball.com/truckbeds/basic.htm

It seems kinda high at $1300, but I know the company and their quality is excellent. Those are some sturdy-built flat beds. If you take off the running boards, put 31" street tires on the front, and 33" mud-grips on the back, you have what I hope my truck will look like with a new flatbed.

What do ya'll think?

first and foremost, in your poll part, it says f-250 1 ton....an f-250 is a 3/4 ton....just to clear that up....secondly...is the truck 2wd or 4x4?

I've seen some really nice looking wooden home-made flat beds around, maybe some with pix on this forum.

Well it sounds like you are really close to just putting on the flat bed.
I say of that is the look you want than go for it. You can make wooden side for it or have metal sides made to fit in the steak pockets so it can be used like a real truck bed. You'd have the best of both worlds.

But on the other hand you could probably find a bed in decent shape for less but of course it wouldn't take the abuse this flat bed could. And as mentioned a wooden flat bed may be cheaper to build also.

I agree with 7283-F250.

I almost bought a 350 dually with a huge flatbed, the flat beds can ussually handle more abuse, and if you have a way to make wooden sides then you have a normall pick up.
With a flat bed you can carry almost anything so long as the truck can handle it. The one down side (as previously stated) is the price, you could probably find a junkyard with normal bed for only a couple hundred.

Also if you look hard enough and are looking in the right junkyards you could probably find a wrecked truck with a flat bed. I live in a some what country like area (most of the year you can't see anything but corn feilds. there is a good junkyard near me and usually atleast 20-25 of his vehicles are old trucks, and about 10 of thoes trucks are flat beds. Before I bought my truck I was looking at buying either a f250 or a f350 and I asked this guy what he wanted for some of thoes beds he said any 6 ft is 600 and any 8 foot is 800, if it is any bigger than that then it is 1000. Compared to that 13 grand that is a good deal. Just keep an eye on junkyards, they have almost anything you whant and it is cheaper than you can find anywhere else.

A flatbed is a great idea. Look at mine with dual stacks.

You weren't real specific with how ''eaten up with rust" it is. You could weld in new panels; JC whitney has them. Or a sheet of thick steel. Not too pretty but would work. Then there is always 4x4's and 2x6's. I've seen the basic flatbeds with headaches bring $600-700 on the consignment auctions
