Ford has sent a letter regarding a Customer Satisfaction Program (Recall?) for 2004-2005 F150 6.5 ft boxes.
Apparently there is an aluminum-backed butyl pad installed on the inside surface of the box that could trap moisture and lead to corrosion. They will add a coating between the pad and the surface to prevent corrosion for free.
It will take about a half a day to make the repairs unless there is already corrosion that needs repaired. The program is in effect until 12/31/2005.
I'd like to know that one too. Lot's of salt around here in Western NY, so it would be good to know and have taken care of before the salt does it's work.
I received the same letter yesterday. Before I received this letter, I read about this issue on the F-150 Online forum that some guy had. He had bubbles in his paint due to this issue. I don't have the letter in front of me, but I believe it said that several 04 and 05 F-150 w/ the 6.5 ft boxes have this butyl pad. I don't think it stated whether it was Flareside or Styleside. The letter said to contact your service department, give them your VIN, and the Program Number and make an appointment. It also said that in some cases, if your truck needs more work and will take longer than 1/2 a day, the service department has been authorized to provide a loaner vehicle. It also said that this needs to be done by 12/31/2005.
I think the problem is where the tail light is, not in the bed. They would be able to see rust after the take the whatever it is off. As for which trucks, I'm not sure other than they say "MAY" have been installed, rather than was installed. I checked with my dealer today, and they have not received the repair kits yet. Also, when I looked myself to see if there was something behind the taillight on mine, I could not find anything except painted metal, so I may not have one.
The instructions stated only style side 6.5' beds, not 5.5 or 8.
I take it back. I do have the butyl pad. To see it you have to look up from where the exhaust is to the area back of where you have the 4x4 or FX4 stickers. Jusy look like a pad, almost like a bandage. So far I have no problem with paint like some others have. I have one of the early ones 08/03 build date with 31k so far.
Iam a body man some of these truck have all ready rusted through. If ford replaces ouater panel YOU are suffering diminshed value same as being hit .you are intiled to this under most state laws. contact your states aterney general.they shood help you .If there is rust under sound deadner how are they going to stop it. Ihave ben trying for 30 years it always comes back sooner or later. dont get me wrong there are a lot of high end prodicts for this.but some day RUST'' THERE only so mutch you can do in that small tight space. need magic wand rustprofing will only hide it . We call these pads Q PADS THEY stiffen panels and reduce vibration and noise.
cbreit, since you are an experienced body man can you answer this? Why do these trucks only have this Q PAD only on the right quarter panel?? Why isnt it on the left panel as well?
I am considering just removing it completely to see if I can tell the difference in the sound. What are your thoughts on this?
I would gess cost these pads are not cheap. IN testing in certen condision marbe right ouater panel made noise (vibrated) there who knows.go ahead take it off pads are brital when cold soft when hot take it off cold it shood be easer. use 3 inch wide pudy knife dont scratch through primer . 3m makes a ruberised under coat that is verry good .put on 2to3 coats give it plenty of dry time betwen coats. It will need to be warm for this.I know we will be more carfial than the dearler. take your time.
This seems to be an oppertunity to add soundproofing. I wonder if dealers can do that while making the replacement. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra if it's worth reducing overall noise level.
I had paint blisters in that area. Brought it to the dealer and they "fixed" it. Then I got the letter about the pad and rust. Checked and I have the pad.
The question is, will Ford do the "fix" since the pad is still there?
Also, the letter Ford will replace the panel if "severe" corrosion has developed.
If paint blistered, as mine did, would that be considered "severe" since the rust came from the pad trapping moisture? And if the pad is not removed, will the rust return?
Thanks...........
ps: Check your rear bumpers from the inside. You will find rust in the curves.Had my bumper replaced under warranty.
