Explorer Catalytic Converter?
What can cause a cat to get clogged. How many cats are on a 4.0 Exolorer, how hard are they to replace. Local mechanic told wife they are clogged and wants 500 to replace (2) CATS.

The insides can come apart and clog up the cat. If they are truly clogged, you should notice power dropping quite a bit as they get worse. You could probably replace the stockers with aftermarket cats for a lot less.

What year is your explorer & how many miles are on it. According to the EPA the converters fall under -Specified major emission control components and are covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use. on 95 and newer vehicles. I have a 2001 4.6L Supercrew (53k miles) that had a rattle from one of the cats, took to a local dealer & it was replaced at no charge.
