Got my first blackstone lab report on an oil change I made at 15000 miles
in part it said "this is a perfect wearing 6.0 diesel engine"
And that with wear like this I could increase my change interval to 5,500 miles with no problem
All the levels were below the average with the exception of Molybdenum which was way high (but I think high is a good thing as isnt this an advantagous additive to oil?)
They finished by saying that the engin was as normal as they come and there were no problems with the sample
I use Mobil Delvac 1500 DINO oil
So it appears by this report that the added expense of a syn oil would be wasted money
the added expense of a syn oil would be wasted money
It depends... For starters, my opinion is somewhat jaded since I use the mobil1 synthetic in my 6.0- I buy the oil on sale, total cost for the oil & filter is about $70.This is about the same as what a lot of dealers charge for dino...Or about $25-40 more than most do-it-yourself dino.
Currently at 48,000 miles- I get 1 mpg increase towing and unloaded. This does equate to fuel savings over 5,000 mile. Small $ maybe. But that is about 20 gallons in a 5,000 mile interval or $35-40. By my math, there is no additional cost to use synthetic... Only benefits!!!
Easier starts (it hums when cold) smoother running & better mpg. If I haven't convinced anyone yet to switch to synthetic, go to the oil forum & read-up or do your own research. Also, there are several other highly rated synthetics made by Shell, Royal Purple etc.
I have been running Mobil Delvac 1 5w40 since the second change and im at 30k now. just got my Blackstone report back as well everyting checked out to be great. First check. they said that from the looks of the shearing and wear i can get 7500 out of an oil change. the oil though is about 100bucks for 4 gallons to my door. :-( plus filter but tis a 6k dollor engine so i just say hey its part of owning a great engine. i didnt lease i own so i want to have this truck for 10 years maybe more so i just do what i can to make it happy..
Got my first blackstone analysis back today. No antifreeze as I feared, but they did find about 1% diesel in the sample. 32K+ miles and 3464 on the sample. Told me take the next sample after 4500-5000 on my regular oil change. They did say that the diesel wasn't considered "high" in this sample, but that it did cause reduced viscosity. Also said this engine was bad to shear oil, so the viscosity was OK. Relieved about the antifreeze thing, tho. At least I don't think I have a head gasket leaking anymore, just that right rear of the block thingy constantly going on. JD did these couple of cold mornings make your's leak again???
If your talking about the 6.0 leaking coolant from the rear of the block only on cold mornings, Its more then likley the EGR cooler tube on the top of the motor. Short orange hose has some weak clamps that loosen up and only when its stone cold, it will run down the starter onto the ground. This is a hard one for the techs to diagnose, as it only happens when cold, and usually dosent show up with a pressure test. HTH, dshiftff
I don't think it's not that they don't know--my tech said he'd replaced a bunch of them, but that since he couldn't see it and the dye wouldn't show up with his light he couldn't do anything for me. It doesn't get cold many mornings here in Austin, but my landlord is complaining about the dye spots in the drive now. I think you are totally correct about the hose, but gettin mamma to turn loose of her truck is hard--she HATES drivin my chubby. Guess I'll have to sneak it away one morning early and suffer the consequences later. Tomorrow probably gonna be the last cold morning I have a chance, so I'm crossing my fingers hoping for a drip in the morning.
