Did I get the shaft?

Ok, notorious stumbling on a 4.6, SCREW - 2002.
No codes (expected). I figured a COP was about to expired because of this wonderful forum.

I took it to the dealer - $99.95 diagnostic fee...again, I expected this because of this GREAT forum. I ok'd the dealer to do the following:
1. Replace #4 COP
2. Reprogram the ECM, I asked why, he said there were some updates needed? Racerguy, do you know anything about this?
3. Diagnostic fee

Total = $390. I know I could have gone to NAPA and bought the COP for $60, but I decided I needed the dealer warranty for this, and besides, I feel lazy.

$100 for diag, about right. $100? for COP, about right. This leaves $190 to install coil and reprogram the PCM, OUCH! Where I work (a dealer) that would have been $32.50 to install #4 coil. $39 to reprogram PCM. For a total of about $270.

I thought the 4.6 had one coil for 4 plugs....mine does. The 5.4 has COP's.
Someone correct me.

I had the same thing done to my truck.

Diagnose $109.95
Replace coil #8 $44.75
Coil Assembly $161.57
Total $316.27

They also reprogramed the processor to latest updates and erased codes. These are Canadian dollars

The older 4.6 had only 2 coils and plug wires. The newer ones have COPs.
lm1d there are updates for the PCM quite regularly. Usually they are for an emissions or driveability concern but we don't always find out what exactly they are supposed to do. Some techs reprogram the PCM any time there is an update and they see it hasn't been done, others dont.

Well,
Picked up the truck from the dealer. Reprogramming PCM was 89.95. I called around and the cylinder balance test was 99.95 typical. The COP was 138. The rest was labor and shop supplies, whatever that is.

Once I got the truck back, problem solved...but what amazed me was the truck. The power seemed to be increased, truck ran smoother, and the idle control seemed to be functioning differently. My opinion is the PCM programming was certainly needed. Truck is running like a scalded cat right now.
