I've got a 2001 Explorer Sport and the gas mileage is horrible. I'm getting about 20-21 mpg on the highway and 15-17 mpg in town. Is there anything I can do to increase the mileage. I got rid of my old Aerostar because the mileage was terrible, but this Sport makes the Aero look like a Focus. I love the truck but this is ridiculous.
What are looking at for vehical milage? You can replace the fule filter, air filter, plugs, plug wires, can of sea foam and go from there. If you have close to 100k miles you might want to change your oxygen sensors. Otherwise go to an autozone and they will lend you a fuel pressure gauge and make sure your fuel pressure is up to par.
Just curious ... what kind of mileage were you expecting.
See attached pic below ... sorry, I guess I can't insert the pic. But I have several pics of the window stickers that clearly state 15 city, 20 highway. I think you are on the high end of the standard mileage, for the 6 at least.
I've gotten 13 during the winter, but get 15 in the summer and 19-20 on a trip. It's hard to believe the Aerostar was much better if it had a 6.
I assume you're figuring the mileage by resetting the odometer's trip-ometer to zero after a fill up, driving a tankful, and dividing the miles driven by gallons used to fill up, then resetting and repeating. I do mine every single time, and would not be complaining if I were you.
There is no other way to compute mileage!!! I've had people say their car got bad mileage because it used $20 going to work and back in a week. You ask them and how many miles that is, and they say ... I don't know. Forget the mpg computers too, they're always at least 2-5 mpg optimistic, so if that;s how you're doing it, you better not figure it out with a calculator, or you'll be even more disapointed.
I was getting around 225mpg in the city. Went and got a sct chip and pushed me up to around 310 city driving. Mileage will change on how big your foot is.
Wow, 225 is low ... that's like 11 mpg. I typically get around 310-315 miles per tank mostly around town, except in the winter, when it goes down as low as 13 mpg (oxygenated gas combined with increased idling and warmup, and letting the car run at the 7-11, etc). THat equates out to about 15 mpg ... 315 miles / 21 gallons = around 15 mpg. Highway, aroound 400 - 420 miles / 21 gallons = roughly19-20 mpg. These numbers have been rock solid since the day I've owned it.
What exactly is the SCT chip, where'd you get it and how much is it??? I also guess you now have to use premium fuel, right?
my explorer with a 4 litre v-6 gets 14.5 mpg in town and almost 20mpg on the highway. i dont think you shoul be complaining. i also had an areostar and it got about the same as the explorer.
if you think the milage you are getting is bad you should try my full size bronco out. that really sucks down the fuel.12 city and 13.5 hyway.
I'm 4x4 and sit on 30" tires.O big foot too. LOL The sct is a reprogram chip that plug in at the back of your ECM.It give you a way to set your truck on any of 3 setting that are program by Ken and the group at motorhaven. I have 87 mod. that changes the way the truck shifts and runs and a 91 and 93 setting too. Go to Computer Chips and Tuners and talk to Ken he the man.
woww i dont know whats wrong with mine explorer then cuz i get about 210 per tank i have a 1999 4.0 ohv with 31 tires and 3.73 rear end and a 2X4 well i havent fix the speedometer yet but thats only like a 10% i think. any ideas what should be wrong with my explo???
This is part of your problem 3.73 . You really need 4.10 or something better then this. I'm running 4.10s on 30" and that stock on my X. Your get up and go will be a lot better to.
With those tires, you must be so far out of the powerband that it's not funny. You better either get 456 rears or go back to normal tires. I can't believe you can stand the truck being such a dog off the line !!! Those are your ONLY two options. Your truck must be lugging 100% of the time to get that kind of mileage.
