bad idle
I have a 86 F150 l6 and it runs fine but whenever I come to a stop and it idles horribly rough and so much exaust comes out that I can't see the cars around me. It also reaks of gas like the car just flooded. I changed the cap, plugs and wires but that didn't do a thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need it to pass smog because I live in lovely law laiden California. Please help.

Sounds like your carb is running rich. No change in the ignition system will help that. Has the carb ever been tweaked? If not, you might be due for a rebuild. Float could be sticking, jet could be messed up... there are several reasons for your smoking problem and bad idle.
