A few questions

Hey all. I own a 1986 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat with a 302 V8. I have a few minor questions. One thing that is happening is when the temperature is very cold, and my truck has been sitting all night when I turn my key to the on position and then proceed to turn the truck over, it fires right up. But if I have been driving the truck for at least 10 minutes or if the truck has just been sitting in 70 or above degree temperature for a short amount of time, when I go to turn my truck over it takes it a good 15 seconds of turning over before it will fire up. My first thought was that my fuel pump was losing prime, but I just wanted someone else's opinion. Also, once my truck has started up, it runs great but my oil pressure guage reads VERY high, like around 80 psi. I know the guage isnt stuck because when I turn the engine off, the guage resets itself. Is this normal pressure or should I have it looked at? It has read 80 psi with no fluctuation durring acceleration since I have owned the truck aka 16 years now. Other than that the truck runs absolutely great. Also, on a different note, does anybody happen to have the horsepower and torque ratings stock for this motor? If anyne can help or would like to get in touch with me feel free to email me at BIGVIC0284@juno.com.

A few questions

I would check the fuel pressure after you turn it off. If it drops, it could be leaking injectors dribbling fuel in the motor and flooding the engine making it hard to start. A clue to this would be black smoke out of the tailpipe when it is hard to start.

The horsepower is sad, I think it is something like 175hp. If youd o a search i know it has come up before. I have the same truck but with about 300,000km and the engine is very tired, how is yours?

Well, I know the stock horsepower is 185 but I was really wondering about the torque. Actually, mine has 37,000 original miles and the engine in mine is wonderful. I have had it bored .60 and had a mild cam put in. I am estimating mine to have around 325 horses. It still has the BRIGHT red/white pattern stock paintjob. The only problem was that my grandpa kept this truck as a backup and always kept in the garage, needless to say it didnt get driven much and therefore wasnt mantained properly. Other than the above mentioned small "glitches", I love the truck. I plan to drop a 460 into the body in the future, after I get out of college and all. And many other upgrades that I just dont have ther finacial backing for at the moment.

I here you loud and clear about the money situation because I am in college also. Dropping the 460 in your truck could be a bigger pain then you want, if I were you I would build a 351w or a 302 and drop it in. These engines are much lighter then the 460 and will cause a lot less more problem. If you start getting into huge power you will have to swap the tranny, rear axle, and gear's. These things will have to be swapped for the 460 anyway along with springs, and a beefier front suspension. The Pocket book is the limit, so good luck.
