1968 trailer tug

Have a 68 trailer tug with a C-6 transimssion (w/460). I plan to rebuild with a HD torque converter, a towing shift linkage and transmission cooling. Anybody have any knowledgeable suggestions? Should I add engine oil cooling?

What is a trailer tug? Is this the right forum to ask the question in?

Thanks six, I'll try to group them in the future. I'm still new to all this. I'll try to find the Bronco forum tonight.

John, sorry. My 'trailer tug' is a 1968 F-250 crew cab. It's currently a hot rod with a fairly 'used' motor and the trans could use some attention. My plan is to tow (tug a trailer) versus hot rodding.

No Problem, Your post started "Have a 68 trailer tug" and I had no idea what you were referring to. Should you have posted I have a 68 F250 crew cab, that I call trailer tug, I would have had a better understanding.

The tranny cooling should handle your needs. The others should be good to go.

Thumbs up

68 crew, oil cooler is a very good idea if you plan on pulling alot. my 97 f250 hd 4x4 has factory oil cooling set up it does a great job, 100k plus of hard use.

On a 1968 Ford you probably should not go with an oil cooler. The reason for ol coolers on newer trucks is they do not have the frontal surface area to increase their radiator size. Especially on older trucks, having cold oil is not a good thing.

Put the biggest fan powered tranny cooler (25k GVW) you can in the truck, keep the tranny cooling separate from the radiator itself and the biggest 4 core radiator you can fit. Everything will be good.

For towing, a full syn fluid for the rear end and tranny might be a good idea, along with changing it once a year. Never tried it with a 460 set up , but, on my smaller V-6 Fords, going full syn. did make a difference in mileage. On almost every 460 I have seen or driven, 8 mpg seems the norm so I doubt it will give increase mileage, but, it might help the rear axle live longer while towing.

my 460 averges closer to 12-14 pulling, but I got it geared 3.55 diffs, 5spd trans. as for the oil cooler it dosn't keep it cold ,just from over heating

You realize that the owner and moderators of these forums could make it a lot easier on the members if they had the same rules for each forum. I think you guys need to talk to each other instead of disseminating contradictory information. From the 73-79 Forum:

PLEASE post only one question per topic! Multiple questions in the same thread add confusion.

still confused, Hawkrod

If it's something along the lines of, my radio doesn't work and how do i do a disk brake swap, that's good for two different posts. If it's all stuff along the same general lines, then a couple of specific concerns in one post are the way to go. In this case, it was all stuff about improving the truck for towing, so it's ok to say, should I add a shift kit and engine oil cooling in the same post.
