ok i am not sure how it is with the rest of the country right now, but gas prices have been steadily dropping for the past few weeks. normally in southern california it is a little high, but driving home today i saw it for 93 cents a gal at an arco, most of the rest i passed were right at 1.00
Here in Oregon, land of the "you are too stoopid to pump yer own gas" laws, we pay between $1.12 to $1.50 per gallon for regular. I am amazed that stations just a mile or two apart can have such different prices.
Back when Gas was "reasonable" I used to be brand loyal. Now, I go for cheap.
Eastern Massachusetts last night was $1.07 at the Gulf and Hess gas stations. Not too bad. Average though at bigger stations like Exxon, Mobil, Sunoco is still $1.15 - $1.25.
I have bought it as low as $.97/gal here in Maine. The current average for regular is $1.05 now. It was $1.02 a couple of days ago but then there was news that Russia had agreed to cut output by 150,000 barrels/day and of course prices went back up a couple of cents because you know, that effect which won't be felt for another 8 months effects our price now.....
You know, I am not for price controls in industries where REAL competition is possible and the PRICE of an item is directly related to the COST but there is no such relationship in oil and fuel. This is highlighted by the fact that one Texaco could have it for $1.05 here and another Texaco a couple of towns over is at $1.13. Cumberland Farms and Getty are typically the lowest here. Right now, CF has the ball at $1.02 which surprises me because last Friday, on my way to work, the CF near my office as well as the one on the other side of town were at $1.02. Same as when I went to lunch. On my way back to work from lunch, the one near my work went up to $1.05. I immediately went up to the Getty near my house and tanked up at $1.02 because I KNEW it was on the way back up. By Monday the Getty was still at $1.02 as well as the CF on the other side of town. The CF by my work was still at $1.05. By Tuesday morning, the CF near work was back to $1.02 and by Wednesday, the Getty was at $1.05. So far, it has stuck there. STOP THE ROLLER COASTER, I WANT TO GET OFF BEFORE I GET SICK! And to top it all off.... I got oil delivered yesterday - $1.16/gal. 4 months ago? Before the big drops in prices? I got filled at $1.27/gal. Heating oil has only dropped $.11/gal while gasoline prices have dropped about $.30/gal????
I am all for free markets and captialism but there is a reason we have anti-trust and monoploy laws....
up here in Winnipeg 48.9 cents a leter + a 3.5 cent discount equils 45.4. too bad it can't be this cheap in the summer when i drive my 1978 ford. but still, that's cheap
About $1.17 in Mossyrock, WA. Not bad price for out-of-town gas, but now our Governor wants a $.09/gal gas tax for road repairs and transent programs. The roads where I live are in fine shape, and I don't want to pay for ferrys and Metro busses so that people 2 hours away from where I live can have a cheaper boarding ticket for them.
I realize this is a little out of the country but here in Germany we pay 1.95 for 87. On the economy its about 4.00 per gallon. So I spend about 240.00 a month on gas. Hope everyone feels a little better.
Paid 1.04 at Texaco last night in Lincoln, Ne. BTW: You can thank the Russians for low gas prices. OPEC wants to cut production to jack up the price but needs the cooperation of Mexico, Norway, and Russia to pull it off. Russia said "NYET!" There oil production is basically in Siberia, so if they idle their equipment to cut production it will freeze up and they'll NEVER get it started again! So bend over and smile, OPEC!:P
I was there last year and 87 Octane was just over $9.00 canadian/imperial gallon.
86 pence per litre.
86p x $2.30 Can = $2.00/litre x 4.5 = $9.00 Imp. gallon
86p x $1.20 US per litre x 4 = 1 U.S gallon @ $4.80
4 litres at 87p is Comparable to $4.80 U.S. / U.S. gallon
It's currently $1.58 in Honolulu...the lowest it's been in 2 years! Last year about this time I think it was around $1.78 for regular. Good thing it's a small island.
A lot of the problem is government regulation of fuel content. There are various fuel formulations/restrictions (oxygenation levels, etc.) for different regions and seasons. See "Gasoline Prices--Why So High Last Spring?"(Oct 2001 Ideas on Liberty, but the Foundation for Economic Education. Call 914-591-8910 and see if they will give you a complimentary copy or wait several months and it may be available on their web site www.fee.org) for an explanation of this and many other factors affecting gasoline prices, including supply and demand.
It would be nice if supply and demand functioned in the gasoline market. I filled up my wifes car this noon for 99.9 a gallon, most stations around me were at 109.9. I drove down there in the truck 10 minutes later and they had jumped up to 112.9. I guess I'll fill up the truck later. We should be thankful Vlad needs money, remember paying 2$ a gallon at the middle of last summer ? DF
