I called a local bank in town and they put me through to MBNA for My first card and I was good at first paying it off every month and even saving up and making payment plans for car parts and repairs. But over the years I ended up needing it for thing. Used it for $500 deposit on car, needed furniture for new place, etc. I got a second card allong the way with a lower interest rate and that didn't help. I got a 3rd card (sears) only besause I needed a tool box and they offered 0% interest for a year(that did get payed off and the card is not in my wallet). Well anyway I got over (quite a bit) in debt really quick(about 2-3 years) and I try my best not to use them. But between what I get payed, my CC bills and regular bills I put all my gas on a CC I get 5% off gas purchases with.
Just be careful and follow what alot of these peopl are saying.
Right now I kinda regret getting a CC but if that was the case I would be sitting on milk crates, eating at an empty wire spool and sleeping on a pallett
And one other thing. I knew a guy who had a CC with the bank he was using and they froze his account once because he was late on a CC payment. He was upset because he found it was froze on a friday night as he was leaving for a trip. He would have prefered them to take the money ot of his account rather than freeze it untill he could get to see them the following monday. Just be carefull about getting a CC through the bank you deal with.

heck My bank somehow signed me up for their credit card. I never applied for it but every month I get a full statement. I think it's funny how they continue to waste paper and postage because the credit card has been sitting around in my safe for months now, I've never charged a thing to it and don't plan to.
I'm trying to live the same legacy as my father whose now almost 60 and has never had a credit card of any kind, heck he's never even had an atm card. I like his form of emergency credit, he just keeps a few thousand dollars locked in his safe at all times just in case. and of course in case we're invaded or something and currency becomes worthless a few hundred dollars in silver.
I graduate High school this May and more than likely go to college next semester. All these opinions sound great, thanks!
As of now, I have a cell phone which is under my Dad's name. I pay for it, but he gets credit . Is there a lot involved in changing it to my name? Maybe that's a way to get credit? Thanks.
I'm 18, and am trying to work on building credit from nothing so I can eventually get a loan or better rates w/ Ford credit when trying to buy a truck.
I looked into it w/ my bank, and they're sending me the paperwork to apply for a secured card, where I put in a $300 deposit, and that is my limit. I use it for little expenses, gas, food, etc.... pay it off in full each month, and they'll start ranking me w/ the credit bureaus. Eventually I'll get offers for higher limits/lower rates, so I'll have to consider those as they come.
Honestly, I wish I never had to use a credit card, but you kind of need one, to build credit for getting loans, etc... for renting cars... I'd be happy paying in cash/atm/check card, which works as a Visa also.
