Awesome engine - like SMiller said, take a look at the V10 forum as their is a lot of good feedback there. You'll find people are pretty happy with their V10s.
My signature does not properly portray how much I like the 3 Valve 362 HP 455 ftlbs torque of the 2005 V10 motor. The truth is that married to a 5speed TorqueShift 5R110 and pumped into 4.30:1 gears this is one serious towing machine!
Like others said, the oil burner is better suited for towing but only worth the money if you tow a great deal. My brother in law has the harley version with the diesel and only gets 4 mpg better than me. Not worth the extra outlay in my opinion considering the noise, smell and not having to plug it in, in the winter.
My '02 v10 would outpull the '97 psd I had no questions asked. The '05 v10 I have now will outpull the '02 with no problem and the '05 weighst 2300lbs more than my old '02.
I have a new 05 V10 and it is a great motor. The mileage is poor but thats the way it is. I put 4" lift, Weld EVO velociti 8's and Toyo 35x12.50x18 M/T's and that took it down 2 mpg. The truck has 5000 miles and must be breaking in good, lately I've noticed a big increase in performance and the mpg has started to increase. Pictures are in my gallery.
i just used my 05 to tow my big boat 145 miles and the v10 never knew it was there. 7500 lbs not a peep out of it and it only had 300 miles on it but i had to move the boat as its sold and a snow storm is coming. alright i only got 10 mpg towing but it sure never knew what i was doing. if you can find one look at the 05 towing guide the 6.8 v10 its only a few lbs lower on tow but higher in payload then the psd.

Captchas you only got 10mpg towing. I would not be ashamed of that at all. My '05 drw has so far given me a high mpg of 8.7 and a low of 4.6. Right now on the last tankful I got 7.4 and I was excited to get that good. I had been getting 6.1-6.6mpg on the previous couple tanks. I do plow snow and leave the hubs locked in though. I got 8.7 when I unlocked the hubs and drove 100 miles on the highway. Right now I can get about 200 miles on a tankful if I fill it up when its around 1/4 tank. Usually takes 28-32 gallons.(40 gal tank)
As mine breaks in the poor empty town/city driving is not dramatically increasing but what I did get out of the extra horsies and troque was MUCH inproved towing economy.
My 2 valve 2001 V10 310 HP version got 12-14mpg empty and 6.8-8.8mpg heavy. The 3 Valve V10 is now up to 11.7mpg in town empty and up to 9.4mpg towing heavy and fast.
Part of it is the better 3valve motor, but I think a LOT can be said for the 5R110 Troqueshift trans Tow/Haul mode and 4.30 gears. Much improved tow vehicle now.
Thanks Ford...Please don't orphan this motor in 2007! I am already thinking of new truck in 2008 and my wife has hinted she wants an 06 V10 of her own, Probably a little Lariat CC F250 2x4 SB. (I had to settle for a White King Ranch cuz the other two colors are not to our liking, and my wife hates the White color so she wants a Red truck of her own, go figure)

The payload increase for the V10 over the PSD is due to the fact the V10 engine weights less than the diesel. The total payload is derived from subtracting the total truck weight from the maximum allowable weight of the vehicle including the payload. Less truck weight equals more payload weight. It has nothing to due with the engine.
The GVRW, or total towing weight, is dependant upon what the engine is capable of pulling. The diesel will pull more than the V10.
In theory, if unlimited transmission gears were available, the higher horsepower V10 would outpull the diesel. However, we are given a constant in the transmission, so the extra torque of the disel wins out in reality.
I've clocked 190,000 on my 2000 f250, most of it towing stacked heavy equipment trailers. Sometimes i use a 03 6.0 dually for towing and i like my truck better. I only have about a 3-4mpg deficit, and dont have to deal with that dumb 6.0 you have to plug in and never runs right. Total spent on my truck for repairs since ive owned it is about $2500, and it runs better now than it ever has. I was going to get a psd in my next truck, but after driving a 05 v10 with the torqshift and 4.10's, my mind is made up. Also, ive had over 20,000lbs hooked up to my v10, and while it did not like that much weight, it got the job done and never missed a beat
The original poster asked a specific question about what we superduty heavy duty forum members thought of the V10.
I think it is relevent that some of us actually own V10 motors.
I know the Ford brochures are crap but could some one please explain where you get the idea that the PSD is so more capable than the V10. I can only find two or three configurations where the PSD is rated to tow conventional or 5th wheel heavier than the V10 and in those areas the diff is 500lbs or less. Some here seem to imply that there is a lot of difference in capabilities.
Yes, yes , yes I know there are plenty of you out there claiming 24,000lb loads and getting 17-19mpg uphill. I am talking reality here.
How can you seriously imply that because it is a diesel it just must be more capable.
Just what do you know about the limitations of a 2005 F350 3valve 455 ftlbs torque V10 TorqueShift 4.30:1 SuperDuty truck that I should be aware of?
Or is what you really want to say is that the diesel will pull a heavy load up a steep hill faster for longer than the similar loaded V10.
And to that most V10 owners will say...yes it will, whats your point. My V10 is not turbocharged. It still got here. I got here in quiet comfort. I did not hurt my beautiful truck and did I mention the quiet yet.
For what its worth I have a 7900 lb truck to haul/tow 14,900 lbs of Harleys, trailer, adults, dogs, and gear. We have no trouble above 8500 feet any where in the Sierras, or Rockies. And it seems to preform pretty damn good at sea level too here on the Flats of Texas.
Yep it definatly eats more fuel than my PSD does. (wink wink it cost a lot less to own also)
