PS diagnosis

Anyone have any tips for diagnosing power steering problems? I have a bendix system. Works fine when cold, no power steering when hot. Plenty of fluid in it.

Any way to pinpoint the problem to either the pump or the box?

Searches are disabled. Tried browsing, but could not find anything except the bendix box is not the best. Still, I'd hate to change the whole system if it's just the pump.

Thanks
MIke

I've never heard of that problem before. If I were going to change one or the other I would start with the pump. The last one I bought was about $50 exchange at the parts house. I put a used bendix gearbox on my '71, It seems to work fine. Though I haven't actually driven it much yet. I would for sure mount up a power steering cooler if you don't already have one on the truck. I understand that makes a big difference on the longevity of the little gearboxes. I installed the ps cooler out of a '76 f100 on mine, it's the one that mounst on the frame.

It has to be the pump. What else is there? Only hoses and I can't see how they would be affected by heat.

I have been told that if you go with a Bendix that you should make sure that you have a cooler or this will happen. I would try to find a cooler and get it installed and see if that is your problem. I am about to post a new thread about power steering as well. I have yet to do this project in my 72. Good Luck.

Thanks for the replys. I think I will go after the pump first. It's not that old, but it could be bad from the parts store. Hopefully they honor the warranty.

I'm sure a cooler would not help this problem. When I say it works good cold, I'm talking below freezing first thing in the morning. After driving for maybe 3 miles, it starts to go. If I start on a "warm" morning (45deg) it does not work from the beginning.

Sounds like your fluid has to be cold and thick for the pump to move it. I would go for the pump, and it is an easier change out before you tackle the box.

Well, It was the pump. It finally gave out completely, so I could tell what was bad. Autozone gave me a new one no questions asked, and without a reciept!
