I don't know how much he would charge you but CustomEifs who is really known for altering gm efi's is building a custom efi for my 88 460. The chip he is providing will be programmable via my laptop. I wont' get the system till the end of the month so I can't vouch for it's reliability but he might be able to modify your chip or provide you with one for a lot less than you have been quoted.
I've got an 89 f250 and did about the same thing you're talking about doing with the cam. I started with a full Banks header to tailpipe system then, looking for more, I went to comp to grind out a cam. I had a custom cam ground up to work with the FI, installed it and it sucked. It ran stupid rich and actually lost power,.
Yeah, I don't remember off the top of my head, but it was the pretty close to the middle of the three carb cams comp has in the extreme 4x4 line, with the biggest difference being the 114 LSA. It was a custom grind.
I'm assuming you're asking silent? My banks headers were bought as the whole system whih goes for about 1500. I believe the headers alone go for around 800. If you're interested, I just pulled that engine and am looking to get rid of the headers which I'll give someone a pretty good price on..

Just had my 460 out of my 96 2 weeks ago for an antifreeze disappearing problem. While I had the heads off and decked .010" I got brave and put a new cam in as well. My local speed shop was great help. I told them what I wanted for performance and the gear ratio and a couple of engine details and they did all the leg work to find a suitable cam. While it is still to early to tell if it is perfect for all my needs, so far I am very happy.
I spec'd a cam for towing and everyday driving with more torque in the low end as my highway cruise rpm is about 2100, and I have a 9 foot camper on the truck all summer (not yet on the truck still winter here)
Because of the time restraints I was under I couldn't get the comp cam you are looking at but I got something fairly similar. A Crane cam grind #H260-2. Spec sheet is long and says it is for a 68 and up 370ci. If you look on Cranes site you can view the specs. Power is 1600-4600 for this cam. I reused my stock springs and I did have to shim the rockers for the proper preload
It took about a week for the computer to get organized, but is getting better all the time I have only put about 250 miles on since the change. No black smoke but I can't give mileage count. It did run rich for a few days, and started funny on cold mornings
Specs for my truck just for your info and if you are suggested something different there may be a reason
Dual K&N cone airfilters, no airbox, no silencers, 3.5" diesel exhaust, no cat, .040" over 9to1 pistons .060" offset '0' deck height, heads shaved min .010. Straight up cam gear set. 5 speed and 3.55 rear 2wd. I believe the computer is stock, initial timing set to 12 deg
Hey thanks OLD5, sounds like it is working out pretty well for you, that's great please keep me posted. Just dropped my block off down at the machine shop today to get it bored 40 over. We ported and polished the efi heads moderately. This is a donor motor the original is still in the truck and running fine (can always use more ).
Thanks a million
