Burned up scj

Anybody ever try to salvage a motor that went through a garage fire ? It was a '70 429 scj Torino Cobra, nothing left but they did cut the motor & top loader trans out before junking the car. The shaker and aluminum intake are melted into the lifter galleries the valve covers melted into the heads, definately got real hot. Any thoughts ?

It can't hurt to have it checked outed by a machine shop. I know I wouldn't throw it away just yet. I blew mine up and cracked the block and head. I sold it and the person who bought it had it repaired. I know it's a little different but it was saved.

I bet some of the intake is melted into the intake ports of the head and around the valves.

I have heard of people salvaging heads that this has happened to, it will be alot of work. The heat may not have hurt the cast iron heads. It would be worth having them looked at, after all how many D0OE-R heads do you come across?

Chances are the steel pieces are fine, though you may have to use a die grinder and some patience to get the last of the melted aluminum and pot metal (carb) ouf of the nooks and crannies. An SCJ block, complete with crank and rods, and a set of vintage SCJ heads is worth the effort.

The amount of heat it takes to melt the carb or even the stamped steel valve covers is nothing compared to the heat needed to damage the iron heads or block. Have it checked out as it will be worth the investment in time and effort.
