Question V8 swap question

My father-in-law has an '85 short bed 6 cyl. The plan is to swap in a '91 5.0 AOD from a Mustang.

Is that a "bolt in" as far as motor and tranny mounts goes?

I've done a lot of other V8 swaps, just never a Ford, or a truck!

Looking forward to the fun though!

The 5.0 won't bolt in where the 6 was. You'll have to go find the V8 frame perches and put them in your truck. One side will be bolted on, the other you will have to drill if you decide to go the junkyard route on this. The tranny mount should work perfectly, they are all pretty much the same.

Sounds like a nice swap... good luck

Are you going carberated or planning on going EFI.

If going carberated then you will need a early model timing cover because the 90 5.0 timing cover doesn't have the hole for the fuel pump. You may also need a fuel pump ecentric. You will need to convert the distributer to a duraspark type of go after market because no computer to control the 5.0 distributer. Many threads about that on this list. If staying with the AOD, you will need the TV adjustable rod from an 85 truck with 302/AOD or go with an aftermarket TV cable else the trans won't shift properly and will burn up(If going 4 barrel then the aftermarket cable or rolling your own is the only choice)

If going EFI then you need the computer and wiring harness and sensors from a 86-90 302 truck. You need the low pressure tank mounted fuel pump and the high pressure frame mounted pump and the fuel lines. You will need the Evaporation canister with the fuel return lines. The frame mounted pump will require some frame drilling to mount up.

As desperado_18_2000 says, you have to change the mount perches.

Working on the same swap myself.

We have a complete '91 motor / AOD, with full harness, computer, and AFM. So would I really need the truck harness you mentioned? We will be going electric pump. I can handle pretty much all the wiring, fuel requirements myself. It's the actual mounting in the engine bay I'm not so sure about. (Well, until I read the first reply!)

I put new Corvette motors in RX-7's all the time, so I figured it would be a pretty similar gig (except the mounts of course). On those, I just make the LS1 harness work with the RX-7's existing wiring, for fuel, ignition, ect...

I'm in Alabama, so a lot of that "smog junk" will GO AWAY!

Thanks for the advice so far, I'm already learning.

I was going to do a similar swap myself on my 82, but decided to keep the six as i didn't feel like searching for parts to get it all together.

Anyways, good luck. Get some pics up when you get'r done.
