Clutch Replacement Cost

Assuming there's nothing uglier than normal in there once they open it up, what should I consider a reasonable price for parts and labor to replace the clutch in my '88 full size with 300 6 and 5 speed trans? I've got estimates from $600-900 so far, and even the $600 sounded a little high to me (of course).

I just did mine (DIY) - 11" HD LUK ('82 Bronco) - IIRC, it was about $175 for the PARTS/ &resurfaced flywheel. Yes $600 DOES sound high - but I wouldn't know... I rarely let anyone else touch my Bronco .

Thanks for the response. Having driven the truck to work for the first time today (I just got this one), I noticed that the clutch doesn't seem to engage especially late, but as it warms up, the gears start feeling stiffer and it gets harder and harder to get it into first gear. Sometimes I'll have to put it in 2nd before I can even get it into first. Is it possible that what I really need is to adjust the freeplay somehow, and not a new clutch? I'm sure I'm grasping at straws, but just in case...

You should have a hydraulic clutch, check the resevoir and see if it is low. Also, do you smella really acrid, burning odor when you take off? Other than that, $600 sound about average. Clutch replacement is not complicated at all, just labor intensive. You might think about getting a Haynes and looking at what's involved, you may be up for it yourself. Matt.
Hey broncr, where'd you get that LUK?

when you replace your clutch have your flywheel resurfaced to insure a smooth clutch. also while you have it taken apart replace your slave cylinder you don't want to pull the trans. back out to replace it later for another $600.00 labor charge.

Is that including all parts and labor? Clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and flywheel resurfacing? If so, then $600 seems about right. But the last time I paid anyone to do a clutch for me was about twenty five years ago, and it was around $250. I used to do most of them myself in the driveway in those days, using cement blocks for jackstands and making an efficient transmission jack by using a skateboard and a a scissor jack! What a pain in the butt. I wouldn't even think of doing a clutch in my driveway like that these days. I'd certainly pay someone $600 to do it for me.

I only drive automatics these days anyway. I'm getting too lazy for a stick shift.
