I'm torn between the 6.0 and the 7.3. I'm looking to buy an F-250 late this year. I'd like to find an 03' or an 04' Crew cab XLT or Lariat with a short bed, low miles, and a decent price tag. I like the 03' for the 7.3 because I keep hearing about the 6.0 having "new engine" problems, but then again I keep hearing about the 7.3 killing trannys. I know there is a lot of debate on this subject, but I don't know the specifics. What, specifically, are the problems that these engines are having?
I have an "early" 03 late March 03 engine build. I had a problem with rear main seal leaking a little. Any problems were resolved by 10,000 miles and it runs great. The only thing was Ford put out a bad flash for the PCM and it took them a while to resolve. Other than that, it has been a really good truck.
So the problems being seen are basically just nuisance problems that a warranty will cover and not design or configuration problems. To hear some talk about it you would think the thing barely goes down the road.
I have a new 05 with the 6.0 PSD and I have had one problem with this truck. The transmission fluid temp sensor went bad with only 600 miles on the clock. Although I wasn't happy about it at the time it really was an annoyance more than anything else having to hear the "ding" check gauges bell everytime I left off the throttle. It was an easy fix and I have had no problems with the truck since. I am currently up to around 7k miles.
On the other hand I have two buddies with the 7.3 PSD, (1 heavily modified, 1 bone stock) both are daily drivers and neither have had any major issues like you have mentioned.
Thanks for the replies. I guess it will come down to the best deal I can find when I get ready to buy. More than likely it will be a 6.0 unless I can find a cheaper 7.3 with the right miles. So far I have seen a lot of high mileage trucks for big bucks. If I can find an 04' with ~30K and under $30K around the end of the year I'll get it. Wish me luck and I'm glad you guys are enjoying your rigs!
