I don't have any mods on my truck, but was wondering if or what the advantage to getting rid of the cat would be. I have been thinking of going witha Tymar type filter.
I took my cat off some time ago, took a long rod and knocked all the crud out of this and then put it back on, just empty. You have feel of the pants better performance guys by just doing this alone, I also saw a slight improvement in fuel mileage from it.
The problem I ran into on this was once I saw what just doing that did on the PSD, I couldn't get past the idea in my head if by doing that simple of a thing and I got that much extra HP to use; What would happen if I did the whole thing with a 3" downpipe followed by 4" straight pipe out the back with no muffler or cat at all??? Yeap so I did this watching my guages and seeing a change in boost able to pull and EGT's come down on hard pulls.
Sure, then came the next thing, wow if all this did that, now what would a chip do??? Yeap, did that too, actually twice as I have two chips stacked and would do this again if I had too. Air intake change a must IMO as the stock intake system is junk at best from FORD...They should have done better than what I had on my 95 model. My home brew air intake system is to die for and looks pretty cool also. You can see some of the mods I did on my photo gallery...
Doing the mods to what extent you wish for will never be a mistake IMO and if you drive as you do now all normal, you will see gains in fuel mileage long as you don't drive her with the chip up to far. The biggest problem I see guys on here as well as me too, driving normal as you did before the mods LOL...Trust me it ain't easy driving the PSD after the mods as the PSD really does wake up and ROCK...
Just spent 3 hours under the truck removing the cat what a PITA... previous owner had already gutted it! Went to the local muffler shop spent 25 bucks on 3" pipe and had them put a 45 bend in it and routed it in front of the back tire.... sounds like a hot rod with turbo whine!
Am planning on the tymar intake and downpipe mods soon, so thought that my $25 exhaust system will work for now.
what a PITA... previous owner had already gutted it!
Hey- there is a scary thought! Time on the weekend is precious enough as it is, let alone spending time on a previously completed mod. Anyone know a way to check to see if a cat is empty or full without removing it? If you beat on it does it make a different sound if it is empty already?
I don't think the average guy will be able to hear the difference that way. The filter media in the cat. is wrapped with an asbestos looking media to keep it from rattling in the cat. can they stuff all this in. It all fits snug and tight in there but with how porus the filter media is of the cat. I would doubt you can hear the difference unless you do that more than a few times LOL...
You know the asbestos stuff Ford has the media wrapped in is something I have seen on the exhaust systems of the new Chevy's rattle. Just the other day one of the salesman I work with at the boat shop just bought a new Chevy, he asked me about a rattle he hears while its running. I told him he will have to change the cat. out to fix it. Took to the Chevy house and they ordered a new system to put on it. I would bet money too the new one does the same thing LOL...I have heard this on the Chevy's for quite some time now. Makes me like my Fords even more if that is possible LOL...You guys have a good day.
Dumb question? My 2000 PSD X has a sticker under the hood that says it does not have a catalytic converter. Do later years have it? There is One muffler-looking thing on the exhaust. It definitely does not have a cat and is not a dog either. I couldn't help sneaking that one in!
I did the Napa 6637 Filter mod last weekend. You have to be extremely observant to notice any difference in noise. I will keep that filter on there until the engine won't suck air through it - at least 30k miles!
Some years have them and some don't. The cat will look like a mini-muffler, usually located much farther forward in the exhaust system. It is definitely located before the easily recognizable actual muffler.
Some of the super duty's had them too. Not sure what years do and don't. I am not sure that even all of the same year models are built the same, they may have some of the same year with and without...
I see Ford has them on the new 6.0L right now anyway. Got to see a brandy new 6.0 full dressed assembly on a pallet. It was impressive looking on the pallet as a full assembly. Saw this at the Ford house last week end. They had a new truck that lost a motor for unknown reason and Ford wanted the motor back without a thing missing... I was thinking someone is in trouble on the rod bolt torque up LOL...
