I have a 96, I put my switch on the dash below where the wait to start light comes on but next to the lil cubby hole thing. Took a couple seconds to get the dash piece off, drill it and put the switch in. also about running the switch, all you need is a switch with the 2 prongs on the back (or two wires like mine had). I got a 4" piece of wire, then the resistor then the rest of the wire to run to the gauge, and then you run one wire back from the gauge to the sensor, plug one in each, this way you can open and close the circuit when wanted. I did all this with a 5.6K because the 10K just wasn't doin it for me.

What was your reason for shifting to the 5.6k.

Went to radio shack a bit ago and got a 10k resistor, came in a pack of about 4 for 99 cents. Are they supposed to be this small??? I got switches layin around the house. Probably just have my dad do it when he gets back, hes an electrician. I'm just a 20 year old student whos used to workin on my old 360ci 1976 f-150, but the electronics on my superduty are a little more than i am used to.

sounds good to have him help out,
but i can always tell when an electrician has worked on their vehicle before it comes in for service because they use wire nuts and romex on it.
do not use either on a truck.
good luck.

Thanks for the replies.

The instructions i've been reading in different post on this site are for the 94-97 years, is the procedure for the 99.5-2003 like mine, pretty much the same?

My 10k mod is on a switch and I also used a reed switch on the idle validation circuit so that the mod only activates after the go pedal is off idle. spend the extra 2 bucks and tap the wire that has power after the switch is activated (approx 5v) and wire the reed switch into your mod.... no rough idle and not too difficult to do.

How do you get the stripped tabs of your wires to stay in the holes of the plug without them falling out?? I tried it today and thats the problem i had so i just left it alone till i got on here to ask. I don't really want to solder them into the holes. Do you shove the wires directly into the hole or between the copper edge of the hole and the inside plastic of the plug??

Turbo,

I assume that you are talking about the wires into the ipr plug.

What I did was to strip the wires about 3/4 inch long, loop them over and place them into the proper spots on the plug.... so that the male end would have two points of contact with the stripped wire. Helps to keep the wire in the receptacle end... just make sure the insulation isn't keeping you from inserting the plug back in completely.

Here is the answer to the other part of your question.... insert the wires into the holes... friction from the male ends keep them in place. The rubber seal on the outside of the plug will also help to hold them in place once you seat it. If you get a CEL after doing the work, you aren't getting a good connection.... Hope this helps. It was the best 4.99 I ever spent!

I just attempted this mod today and i put it on a switch but when i turn the switch on you can put the pedal to the floor and it only has half the power then when you let off the truck dies. I have a 1997 PSD, could somebody tell me what guage wire to use and which wires to splice into? I am using a 10K resistor 1/4 watt rating.

Two-tone,

I used 22 ga. wire, 10K 1/2 watt resistor. I would assume from the symptoms your are describing, that you may have the wrong placement of wires into your ipr plug.

If you search this site, there is a link to a good picture of the ipr plug and which plugs to place your wires into. If I remember right, it is a site by steve baz? You may want to do a internet search for that name. I wouldn't tap into the factory loom or back-tap the plug... don't want any chance of moisture to get in there... besides, if you chip your rig later, you won't need the 10k mod in most instances.

I think from what I remember, if you have the female end of the ipr plug facing you with the three holes looking like two eyes and a mouth, you insert one wire into the left eye and the other into the mouth. It's been a long time since I did my mod. Hopefully someone else will pitch in on this.

Sorry can't help you more....

BTW, I think that you may want to go to the 1/2 watt resistor if you run across one.
