I have an 85 F150 with a 351W and a C6 trans. The trans is on its last leg. I have a new Aod from a 80 Thunderbird with a 302, what do I need to make it work. I would prefer the overdrive of the aod rather then rebuild the C6. Any help would be appreciated.
I wanted to do the same thing to my 84 F150 but I crunched the numbers and it is not worth it. The C6 is the best tranny you can get and it will cost you an arm and a leg to get the AOD in. If your truck is a 4x4 then it is not possible (shouldn't say not possible after hearing what some of the guys do on here). Your best bet is to rebuild the C6, it cost me way to much but I am glad I did it and got it done right, consider a shift kit as well, they are only around $100 and they make the truck shift hard not sloppy. Good Luck!
Sorry, I guess I left that out. No it's only two wheel drive. I know I need swap the flywheel, torque converter out of the 302, that stuff I have. I am not really worried about the overall strength of the Aod compared to the C6. This truck is a daily driver and very rarely is used to haul/tow anything.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Feb-02 AT 09:09 PM (EST)]2wd will make it simpler. Look at the overall length. You may need to modify the driveshaft. Look at the tranny mount location. You may need to move it forward or back. Check the splines on the output shaft. Make sure they match or you may have to get a different yoke. You will have to modify the carb linkage because I believe it uses a cable for shifting, not a vacuum modulator like the c6.
Here's a link explaining how to hook the carb linkage up:
You'll need a TV rod setup from the throttle linkage to the tranny. It connects to the linkage with a ball-like joint. YOu can get it at a junkyard. The c 6 shift pattern is P-R-N-D-2-1 right? if so you can use the AOD without mods because it's pattern is P-R-N-OD-D-L. You might have to adjust the shift linkage so it engages all gears solid and dont slip out or like if you put it in park on a incline and the linkage is out, it will slip on the pawl gear and the truck will roll. I reckon that the C 6 tailshaft is longer than the AOD's. The tranny mount will probably be the same and I know for sure that the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same for all small block fords and C 4, C 5, C 6, and AOD because Ford used those trannies in small blocks. I got a AOD in my 84 f 150 and it cruises on the highway real good. I'd say 3rd gear is the weakest when pulling and dont use overdrive while pulling anything that needs extra gas to pull.
Yes, read the link from bauman engineering. cause if you don't get the T.V. linkage adjusted correctly you WILL fry the tranny. Summit raceing sells a T.V. cable kit that works with a carb. I think it cost 40 bucks. it is definately do-able. just make sure you read that link so you understand whats going on. I used a holley carb and that kit from summit to swap in an AOD to a mustang. make sure the tranny is not an AOD-E or that will drive the cost up.
