I am trying to put a fuel injected 302 out of a 1987 Ford Crown Victoria into a 1983 F150 and i was wondering if it would be as simple as changing out the intakes or if other modifications will be required. Any help you can give would be appreciated.
I did a swap like that last fall, I replaced the engine in my 81 f100 with a newer fuel injected 302 (not sure what it came out of), I swapped everything over. You are going to need to replace the intake as you have already guessed, but you will also need to replace the timing cover, because efi engines use electric pumps, and the carb engines use mechanical, so you need the old timming cover, and fuel pump and the offset pully on the cam gear that runs the pump.
You may also need to replace the oil pan because the one I had had the breather valve on the pan.
You may also have to replace the valve covers, because the efi engines have the extension for the oil filler, and no breather.
And lastly, if you have a clutch make sure the the exhaust manifolds are the same. After I had droped the engine in the truck I had to get the clutch release bolted in, but the exhaust manifold was in the way, what you should look out for is on the efi engine the end of the exhaust manifold (were the pipe bolts to it) may extend past the final port, this could get in the way if you have a clutch. But as far as the exhaust manifold goes if it is the same you may get away with just tying the o2 sensers aside until you get an exhaust job, because I know how bad some of thoes exhoust nuts can be.
So if you think about it the ony things you don't change will be the heads, block and everything inside.
Again if you have a manual trans I realy recomend you look at the exhaust manifolds before you put the engine in or else you will kick yourself later, even if you don't have a manual trans check them out anywase to see if they will bolt up to your current exhoust, because it is easyer to do the manifold switch when it is out of the vehicle. I wish you luck in your swap. If you have anymore questions just ask, we are happy to help.
Not true, I know for a fact that my new 302 is a roller cam and the old distributer is working beutifully.
I put an 86 roller cam fuel injected 302 in my truck, and I also had no problem with the older distributor on the roller cam. I asked a local engine builder about this, and he said you only have to worry about the cam if it is billet, which the factory cams are not.
I also changed the timing cover. One thing I had to do was drill out the alignment dowel holes on the older cover. The newer block had bigger pins. I also had to use the fuel pump cam off the older block that runs the fuel pump. The newer engine had a cam, but it was only one piece and they where basically using it as a washer. The older engine had a cam that was two piece with a sleeve around the cam, so the sleeve ran on the cam, not the fuel pump arm.
As long as you have the older engine there, all this stuff is pretty obvious, and you will have everything you need to make it work. You will probably have to change out the oil pan, dipstick, and the oil pump pickup tube too.
