I have a quick question about the 400 in my 78 F140 4x4. Althought the truck runs fine, i find when i rev the engine up it seems to be back firing into the Carb. After reading some of the threads in this very helpful forum I concluded that I should adjust the timing. However the noice is getting considerably worse. I know it is next to impossible to diagnose a noise over the internet, but when i shut the engine off I hear a loud spinning/rattling noise.
Being only 18 I don't have alot of experience so any help or suggetions would be GREATLY appreciated
As you say it is difficult to troubleshoot such a thing over the internet, but I think you are on the right track. You need to set the timing and you also need to try to idle the engine down some. With correct timing, maybe you will be able to do that.
The noise after you shut off the engine is due to hot spots providing ignition after the ignition is turned off. If you can get everything running right with a slow idle, then the throttle plates are more tightly closed which help alot in preventing this running on.
