leaking pwr steering fluid

88 f-350 truck. It looks like my pwr steering fluid is leaking from the knuckle not from the pump. Is that possible?

How hard to replace knuckle and cost if I do it myself.

Thanks

Vince

Knuckle? Do you mean the steering gearbox?

You sir may be correct

Yes, I guess it is the steering gear box. BTW the pump is making noise and loosing fluid...I suspect from teh Steering gear box.

Where in Atlanta are you lost. I am North of Buford near Chateau Elan. Others may dissagree, Ford Power steering pumps always make noise. You need someone to look at what's going on after cleaning up around the box and pump to determine a positive source for the leak.

I just did this about two days ago on my truck. New steering gearbox from Napa was $194 or so. Took me about 6 hours all told. You will need a pitman arm puller, a pickle fork for separating the pitman arm from the drag link, and a BIG socket for the nut on the end of the pitman arm. Closest I could find was a 35mm 6-point. It was a little loose, but it worked. The hardest part was holding the gearbox in place with one hand while threading the bolts with the other. It weighs about 90 lbs.

There are a number of seals on the steering gearbox, so yes a leak is possilble. Check and make sure exactly where the leak is coming from. The hoses and fittings are more likely leak suspects. Use a spray can of brake cleaner to get the oil off the box and then start it up and see where it leaks. Do not let the pump run dry, that will ruin it and then you will have two problems to fix.

1 5/16" socket called for. Pitman arm puller around $35.00 Autozone. Clean it up really good and have a friend cycle the steering lock to lock and observe, Safely!

Thanks

I will clean it up and check to see if I can tell where the leak is coming from. To the Buford guy...I am in Snellville.

Thanks for all the help.

Mine was leaking, replaced the pitman arm seal, and all is good. There is a kit available for this repair from your local parts store. The pitman arm comes off the bottom of the gearbox and connects to the steering tie rods.

Should I even try the leaks seal stuff that they sell at the parts store? Or is that bogus?

Thanks

I would stay away from leak seal products from radiator stop leak to power steering stop leak. There is tremendous pressure developed in a power steering system, it needs to be fully functional as advertised. I do carry a bottle of stop leak in the tool box for those times when I'm far away from all help and may need to improvise. Wouldn't use it normally.

to 924x2150 How much work is the pitman arm seal. Can you do the repair in truck or do you remove the steering box?
