Please help me loose some of my ignorance on the operational function of my transmission.
03 4R100 (E-350 6.8L)
They call this a 4 speed?
Is it 3 gears plus overdrive?
Is overdrive a gear?
Is torque converter lock-up the same as overdrive?
The 3(?) forward gears I get, it's the OD and TC I'm a little muddeled about.
I'm sure many of you can make this crystal clear to me and others, who are not yet fully knowledgable. Thanks, -Rob-
Yes, it is a four speed. The fourth gear is an overdrive gear. Overdrive is just a fancy name for a gear with less than 1:1 ratio. Overdrive in the 4R100 is 0.71:1, meaning the engine will turn 0.71 times for everytime the driveshaft turns.
It also has a locking torque converter clutch. That is completely separate from the overdrive. There is a very good explanation of how the torque converter and torque converter lockup clutch work in the automotive section of www.howstuffworks.com .
