What's up guys? Hopefully someone can give a helpful suggestion on a problem I am currently having. I just recently had a E4OD rebuilt on my 1994 Bronco. After having driven the vehicle for a few weeks I noticed that the tranny was skipping 3rd gear. As the tranny shifts from 2nd to 3rd it instantly shifts to 4th. I can force the tranny to stay in 3rd for a short while by manipulating the gas pedal. I am sure your first thought is to tell me to take the vehicle back to where I had the tranny rebuilt, but the tranny went out on me while I was out of town. Needless to say, I would have to drive 220 miles just to have the guy look at it. Is there an external adjustment on the tranny, similar to a vacuum modulator that I can adjust or can the tranny be adjusted with a progammer since it is electronically controlled? Or am I an idiot for thinking that? Thanks for you input.
can you get 3rd by pressing the OD cancell switch? as to why it's skipping 3rd, could be problems in the valve body, that's if you can get a positive 3rd when you cancel the OD. I'm only guessing here as that is weird to skip 3rd.
The tranny is not completely skipping 3rd. When taking off from a stop light on level road and keeping the gas constant. You will feel the shift to 3rd but within a second or two it will shift to 4th. I can feather the gas pedal as to barely keep the truck rolling and 3rd will last for atleast a 5 mile an hour increase in speed. I am sure the possible problem is probably within the valve body but since this tranny is electronically controlled I just figured this problem could be fixed by reprogramming. The OD switch really has no effect on the way it shifts through 3rd. Sorry for the crappy explaination.
Casey is correct, what you are feeling is the torque converter clutch engaging. On most E4ODs, the converter locks up right after the 2-3 shift. Also, the E4OD's converter is an on/off type instead of a modulated type. That means when it engages it is much more positive than one like the 4R70W. The shop that rebuilt it probably put a Superior pump kit in it which makes the lockup even more noticable.
To verify that it is infact the converter clutch, right after it engages, you can touch the brake pedal with your left foot and the brake switch will cancel lockup.
That makes sense. Clear one more thing up for me then. Is the E4OD a 4-speed tranny or 5-speed? If it is 4-speed then what you guys are saying, definitely makes sense. Thank you guys for your time. It is very much appreciated.
