I'm in the process of working with my dealership too on the same matter. After reading on these forums, I noticed that I had the same ripple, especially in colder weather. So I took my Scab in and spoke to the service manager. After looking at it he had pictures taken and said he would talk to the Ford rep about what they could do. A few days later they said Ford approved to have the "skin" replaced on the door. That all sounded reasonable to me. I asked what that meant. They stated that the outer sheet metal would be removed, a new one attached, and they would paint per Ford specs. Okay, I thought, it's worth a try.
Well, when I got my truck back, guess what? They did not replace the skin. I was told that they used bondo to try and get the ripples out! That's not acceptable practice for an apparent factory defect. The body shop said the skin cannot be replaced, contrary to what was approved by the Ford rep, so that's why they used bondo!
I will say though, that the body shop manager is not pleased with the results either. They gave me my truck back, so I could at least have it while they work to resolve it with Ford. At this point, the only reasonable alternative is a complete door replacement. I should know within the week and I'll post what the recommendation ends up being.
At this point I wish that I had just left the damn thing the way it was.
Are you talking about the Dodge 2500 Heavy Duty? If you are, tell me what you think of it. There is an '05 SLT here that I like the looks of, since Ford doesn't make what I want with an 8' bed.
yardbird, I got the Chevrolet 2500 HD with a Duramax. I wish the woman at the body shop of my dealership had some more guts and had of cared to talk with Ford to resolve my issue. I wrote a cople of people at Ford and from hearing what you guys have wrote I think I will write the dealership.
I can't beleive this has happened to yet another member w/ this problem. I just printed out your post & am getting ready to drive up & hand it to my service manager & " Owner " of the dealership I am dealing w/. If the only way to fix this problem is replacing the doors than so be it / Replace them !!!
Bozack, I had this problem with my doors and my dealer was able to fix it with the patch. It took two attempts due to the fact that the ripples left the middle of the doors when fixed and went to the bottom, but they still look ok two months later. Have your service mgr. call the service mgr. at Landers Ford in Collierville, TN, he has delt with this problem.
jhaugh before I have him call you are saying just have the patch re-done a second time? I am at the point where I don't want my doors "patched" I want them FIXED even if it means raising enough hell to have new doors put on. I appreciate the info & am on my way up there right now. Enough is ENOUGH about this.
Ok just got home from dealership. Like I posted I printed what you wrote Corona & gave it to my service manager. He read it & said " NO WAY - Bondo will not FIX the problem / just cause more problems & I won't allow it to be done that way"... I explained what I've read on here & what all of you have said about thats the only fix so far Ford will aprove. He got on the phone & made 2 calls on speaker phone so I could listen in & Ford approved new skins for both my doors. They said they just did an update to the skins to keep them from doing it again. I am not sure what they did but they said its not gonna happen again. We'll see.
Now that I have the skins approved if anyone needs contact info & the referral #'s let me know & I'll get them for your service dept. Now that its been approved for me noone should allow their dept to bondo their doors again. Just let me know & I"ll send you my info.
Twtchy I hate to tell you BUT the way they work @ Ford is before you can get anything done from the service dept. 1st you must take your truck in & have them look at your doors. Just to be on the safe side print out a few of the posts that are helpful & the tsb for the mastic patch.
They have to follow the steps Ford has set out for them & if not floowed correctly nothing will get done.
So take your truck in & see what your service dept. says & go from there. They will HAVE to try the patch. It might work on yours? If it does then you'll be finished until it happens again. If not then NOW you have my manager to send your dept to because it seems he's the only one that will be of any solid help.
I went to the parts dept w/ my service manager today to verify that Ford has skins for our trucks & they are showing 2 different types depending on the build date of your truck. It seems the very first trucks made are not listed w/ the "updated" skins. Don't ask me what that means because noone there knew either.
I will be back in there tomorrow to keep on them & ask some more ?'s so I can post all I find out. So if you / anyone has any ?'s they want answered please feel free to pass them on to me. We all might as well use the friendship I've started w/ the highests person @ my dealership in service.
CZCWEST I am w/ you on the entire Bondo thing. The funny thing is /// well theres nothing funny about what they are trying to get away w/.... I guess you drop off your truck in hopes they will fix the problems when in fact they are creating other issues as well. I've been there done that also just thank God noone was killed.
All I have to say is hang in there until I have some actual #'s for the skins & the work order in my hand.
Don't forget to pass on any ?'s you might have for me to ask
