4x4 problem
I have a 92 explorer no major problems just typical maintence, id say the past two years the 4x4 has been acting up i have been cleaning the shift motor several times in a winter but it always seems to get dirty again after a few uses, not matter how good i clean it, it just seems to get dirty again and not work. Should i just buy a new shift motor or is their something i'm doing wrong here, i follwed the site that i found posted up here i used electrical contact cleaner and also used very fine sand paper, on the brushs and the brush riding surface, it works for a few uses then just stops again and i open it up and its dirty again. Does anyone thing i should just buy a new motor or am i doing something wrong here. I see them on ebay for 130 bucks with a 1 year warrenty, so it would not be too bad if i had to buy a new one, am just looking for some input here, thanks

When I did my 92 shift motor earlier this year, everything was very clean inside except where the rubber stop bumper had disentegrated. It seems weird that it's dirty inside everytime you open it up. It might be worth investigating where all the contaminants are coming from. Does it look like dirt from outside getting in, or is something coming apart inside?
