I have a 1988 F150. When I bought the truck, I could switch to either fuel tank but the gauge would stay at past full. The rear tanked leaked so I put a new tank and sending unit in but still the gauge would not work. I pulled the fuel selector switch out and there is two yellow wires. I grounded the wires and each time the gauge would go to empty so I think the gauge is working. I have noticed a few times that the gauge is working but as soon as it gets down to how much gas there is in the tank, it goes right back to past full.
The gas gauges on these trucks are just plain bad. My front tank guage has not worked for 7 or 8 years. The rear sort of works but I do not turst it. I just keep up wtih the mileage. Why Ford could not get something so simple right is beyond me.
my front guage doesnt work either.... kinda bothersome... but I just use the front tank first... wait till my truck bogs cuz its out of gas and switch... he he..
(I dont recomend doing this unless ure sure the tank is clean.. you can have a lot of build up in the bottom of a gas tank and it can clog your fuel filter)

If im not mistaken doesent the sending unit always suck off the bottom any way. so why wouldent it just suck all that crap up anyhow? i have always herd what you are saying but have always wondered this.
The gauges jsut tend to be plain bad... im fixing to replace them on my truck along with teh wiring for them in hopes of fixing it..eventhough the main issue right now is the fact that i cant switch to the alternate tank as is for some reason..BUt check all the wiring to make sure if its intact and proper grounds as well.
