In my scout 800 there is a Ford V8, I checked the casting nimbers off the valve cover and decoded it according to the forum's guidelines and learned that it is a 1968 Galexy engine. What engines did the Galexys come with in 1968?
1968 Galaxy?? Hmm, now i know i'm old because i can actually answer this, and was old enough to drive when they were around. Well, 302 came out in 1968 so sure some had those in them. Also the 390 was fairly common as well and the Galaxy XL may have even had larger engines, but i can tell you that particular car came with those two engines.
I did own a 1967 Galaxy and mine had a 390, but a local salesman, his had a 289. But for 68 Galaxy, i can say without a doubt they came with the 302 and big block 390, those two were very common for the 68 Galaxy....Janet
PS talking about this has made me remember a 1968 Mercury Montclair i owned with a 390, that was quite a car!!
Janet is correct, but in early 68 the 289 was still available. I just checked on a Galaxie website. I couldn't find mention of any other engine, but I'm nearly positive there were larger engines offered then the 390.
THis vechile weighs around 3300 lbs, I have elected to run a Holy 390 mechanical secondaries, used headers, I thik I will run a comp cams something geared toward maximum torque ,I will E- mail with them to get the info I am going for a cam max 4500 rpm, 340 lbs @ 2500 and no less than 310@ 4000 rpm.

Yes Steve, i'm pretty sure you're right about there being a larger engine than the 390, seems to me they had a real dressy XL Galaxy in 68, that had like a 427??? Am i right? I seem to recall it, i'm like 50 years old, but hehehehe, i was sneaking my parents 64 Cadillac out of the garage and driving it at 9 years old!! I was a rebel little tall girl, but i want to add untill i got caught doing it, i never tore anything up. I still remember the first time sneaking that car out and my heart pounded, then i got away with it just driving around the block, then got braver as the weeks went on till i got caught at Ritzee drive Inn by the cops and the drive inn owner (at the 24 hour milk shake burger drive inn, noticed i was to too too young and oh boy!) called my parents because the battery went dead while i had the radio on in accesorie key position, WHEWWW.
I wouldn't rely on just the casting number off of the valve cover. Get the number off of the block as well as the heads. A lot could have happened since 1968.
Check how the spark plugs angle. The FE series engine including the 390 are angled like this \\ //. I'm not real familar with the 289/302 engines, but I think the angle like this \\\\. You can tell just by looking at it if it is a small or big block.
I have decided to buy a crate motor because around here I am looking at 2000 $ to have my engine built, I have never rebuilt an engine so I'm going to by stock remanufactured 302 and then change the cam, headers, intake, and a truck avenger If it is not too big. I can get a crate motor from kragen for $1000 or $700 from other online venders I have seen.
I do not want to rev this engine past 4000 rpm, I have seen that Edlebrock made 340 lbs of torque on a 302 with a .500" cam, I have not found a cam with that kind of lift in the rpm range I am looking for. I think that the stock 302 can take up to .500" lift with 9.5:1 comp so I may need to find some heads that drop my compression down to 8.5:1 and custom grind a cam 204 d at .50 with .750" lift and 104-108 lobe seperation angle.

Well in a 68 Galaxie you could get a 240 six cylinder, 302,390,428,and early in the production run you could get a 427. From what I understand the 289's went to the fairlane. Im sure you could have a got a 289 in the first ones, but the base engine was a 240 and for whoever asked about the 302 hp, it was 210 hp for a 2bbl and 230 for a 4bbl. Hope this helps.
