Well I just traded an old 1976 BMW 2002 for a 1965 F100 with the 300 I6 and Cruisomatic tranny. Overall she's in good shape but there's a few things I need to fix before I can get her on the road. First major problem is the throttle cable is broken and the PO rigged something to just get above idle (picture a cable strung taught between the accelerator pedal and the carb, yeah not pretty or safe.)
I've searched through this forum and elsewhere online but haven't found any definitive information on replacements. I've called around and apparently the I6 throttle cable is NLA. Anyone have ideas on what I should do to get her fixed up? I'm looking at the Lokar 36" universal cable but the ends appear to be wrong. Has anyone else gotten the Lokar to work? Does anyone have any leads on an I6 throttle cable? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Barry,
Thanks for the lead. I just called Mars and they said that despite their inventory listing one in stock the actual item is missing. So no dice there.
44dwarf,
Can you shoot me a PM about the used throttle cable you have? Since I'm new to Ford trucks I don't have much to trade but ironically enough I do have a used throttle cable for a V8. If you're not interested in that I'm sure we can work something else out.
Dave, LMC Truck lists part #42-1240 as Cable-Choke & Throttle. However I wonder if this is the right thing. Some old trucks had two pull cables to manually lock the choke or throttle at a certain position. I wonder if that is what they have or if the cable will somehow work as the actual throttle cable at the pedal.
Give them a call at 1-800-LMC-TRUCK and see what they have to offer. Let us know. I have the same setup. I wouldnt be surprised if they were still floating around in a dealership or two as well. That's where I got my 65 clutch rod.
Anyone else have an old used throttle cable for a 65 with an I6 sitting around? I haven't heard back from 44dwarf yet and since my truck is dead right now I'm kind of in a hurry to get one.
Thanks GregTruck, I'll try calling LMC tomorrow to see if they have what I need.
Dave, ya must have a rare bird there, AFAIK, yours is the only 65 I-6/C-O-M combo that I know of. It would be interesting to run the complete numbers on the ID plate, but I bet the tranny was added after it left the factory.
John,
It is the stock configuration. Here's the info:
Warranty Number: F10BK689809
(F10=F100, B=300 CID 6 Cyl 1V 150HP at 3500 RPM engine, K=Kansas City, 689809=May 1965)
WB: 129
Color: 8M (8=?, M=Wimbledon White) It's currently yellow with white
Model: F100
Body: D81
Trans: G (3 Speed Cruisomatic)
Axle: 08 (3.50 ratio rear end)
GVW: 5000
HP: 150
RPM: 3600
DSO: 74
Interesting, huh? The guy I got it from was telling me it was a pretty unusual combo. It should work out well for us since I like the simplicity and reliability of the I6 300 and my wife only drives automatic.
Sure would like to get her running though. She starts up real nice and the body's pretty good but without an accelerator cable she's not going anywhere.
No luck with LMC truck. Their choke and throttle cable is a dashboard component that can be used either for the choke or for the throttle. That's for when you have a power take off and need to lock the throttle in a position. They had no accelerator cables.
Still looking and would love any ideas people have...
I checked out his listing. He has the incorrect number listed. He has "C5TZ 9A758-A" , there's no such number. It's supposed to be C5TZ 9A758-AE, which is for the 4wd. The Ford tag is also marked wrong. It won't work on the 2wd models as it's 2 inches too short.
Okay, since none of the leads have panned out for getting an actual Ford replacement part I'm going to go the Lokar route. I'm going to need to do some modification though since the Lokar ends aren't the ball couplings. Wish me luck.
I work in parts. I will try to dig up the Pioneer catalog Sunday and if that doesent work I'll give my friend down at the Ford dealership a call Monday and see what he can dig up. They can check other dealers stock as well as their own. They sent to the next county for my clutch rod bushings and had the actual rod in stock. There HAS to be a good answer for this cable thing. These trucks are far too common to have parts that just cant be found. Especially a throttle cable! I'll be back....
Greg, THe dealers all use what I've been using, it's called Parts Voice. They list what other dealer have on inventory if the dealer participates in the program. Not all dealers do. Ford doesn't have any way to share what thier dealers stock. Yes, they're out there, but to find it, that's the hard part. The sad part is, back in the late 70's, I remember sending back a bunch of these cables to Ford on the obsolesence program on code 3 and they eventually went to the landfill in Boston Harbor. Code 3 was designated scrap.
There is a spot on Parts Voice where you can request a part from any dealers who might have it, including the NOS parts guys out there. I'll list it and see if I get a response.
