Does anyone know if a Ford 9" out of an old (1969ish) F-100 will fit in my 84 F-150? If so, are there any problems? How tough is it and what else will i need.
The spring perches are closer together and I think the housing is narrower on the 72 and earlier trucks. You can change the differential into the 84 housing (assuming it's a 9" and not 8.8)but make sure they both have the same number of splines 28 or 31.
A tape measure will tell you. if they are close on overall width and the spring perches is all that is different the you can remove and reweld them in place. Done that, got the hat and the t-shirt.
I bet the early model is too narrow overall. My 1980 does have a 9 inch 31 spline axle in it, it you want to look for one. I don't know when they changed to the 8.8.

I am going through the same conversion right now. I think from '73 up is the same width an the '82 up. I have a '77 that measures up the same as the one in my '86. There are a couple of differences in the years though and I don't know when they changed. I believe Ford changed to the 8.8 in '82 though that may be a year or so off. I bought a complete 9" rear end out of an '80 or '81 PU at the wrecking yard and it turned out to be a 31 spline with tapered axle bearings. The earlier years had regular radial type axle bearings and the bearings and seals were, I guess, easier to replace than the tapered bearings. I haven't gotten in to the brakes yet but they look like they're the same.
One other thing, you will have to get your driveshaft lengthened about 2" because the yoke of the 9" sits further back than the 8.8. You could try using the shaft out of the doner vehicle if it's available...maybe just the rear section but I don't know if you can find a straight one at a wrecking yard (dam* forklifts)
I'm almost done with my swap. Everything has been a bolt up so far and the driveshaft is only about 1 inch short so I'm going to leave it alone unless I get some vibration out of it. That center section is HEAVY, I set it on my chest and slid under the truck to mount it. It was easier to get the axle in by myself that way but the weight of the pumpkin gave me some trouble. Back to the gym I guess.
