I just got my 04 350 back from the body shop. Recently during a snow storm I slammed into a LARGE rock and did some substantial damage to my right front spring and tire ect. My steering wheel was completely upside down and the shop pointed out that the steering box was stripped and needed replacement. Now that I have my truck back (3 weeks later) they have over corrected the steering wheel position. my question is this; Is there an adjustment/procedure that I could do to correct this myself rather than have to take it back and deal with the body shop? Or should I just take it back? I have been told that there is a "simple adjustment" but no one that has told me this knows how to do it. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Sorry for making this a lengthie post. Thanks, Fritz
probably the easiest way is look all the way at the bottom of your steering shaft right where the power steering box is on the frame. theres a black plastic cover over the end of it, pull that cover back and you will see a bolt where the shaft clamps to the splines coming out of the box. take that bolt completely out, get in the truck and turn the steering wheel straight then go put the bolt back in and pull the plastic cover back down.
If it's 4x4,there's an adjustment sleeve on the tie-rod at the pitman arm,NOT the one by the left wheel, loosen the nuts (15 mm) and just turn the sleeve until wheel is centered. If it's 2 wd,it will have to go on a machine, because the only way to correct it is with the tie-rods which will change toe-in.The input shaft on the box and the intermediate shaft from the column have a master spline which only allow them to go together 1 way.
Take it back to the shop and have them do it right,
Part of the alignment procedure is to set the steering wheel straight, anything else is sloppy work.
I'm with FSC. Centering the steering wheel is part of the standard alignment process, and the shop should be willing to fix it for free. If not, I would definately look elsewhere for repairs in the future.
