Hi I have a 1964 F-100 4x4 and I want to put a newer 351 (like a 1978) in my truck it has a 292 in it now. I would like to know if this is possible and if anybody has done this before? Thanks
If I wanted to go with the 351 it would be a windsor. Where could I find some mounts or other good stuff for the 1964. Do you think that I could have the 292 bored to a 312. Any internet sites or something that would be good to look at?
You will need a small block crossmember and motor mounts. Probally availible at Motor Haven here. Or through any truck vendor...Check out Classic Trucks for mounts as they have them in th ad section. DC And cariloina also carry.
Additionally you will need the later model rear manual trans and trans crossmember. Here you can use one from any ford from 65 to 79.
Cut out the bell crossmember and mount the new crossmembers and engine transmission on the drive line centerline. It may or may not be offset to the passenger side. Havent looked at a 4x4 in a while.
modify the intermediate propeller shaft to fit the new transmission.
you will also need to modify the clutch shaft for the 351 mount.
If keeping the 292 a good rebuild and a four barrel manifold and rams head or hedders would suprise you as to the preformance. Not shure on the Y if it is the bore or the stroke that makes the cubic inches. A little more money to rebuild the 292 but you will not have the hundreds of bucks into modifying the chassis.
What do you intend for the use of the truck? daily driver? occasional hauler. or mudder?
I was wanting to make a reliable daily driver and use it to go hunting and fishing. Of course I will also want to do a little bit of muddin in it also. I was looking around and am leaning more towards rebuilding the 292 because I have an another 64 truck complete with a blown engine, decent tranny and transfer case.
