MIKE-H. HAD PROBLEMS STARTING MY 82 f-150,had to prime the carb to get her to start.so i changed the fuel pump, to no availe. Then I rebuilt the carb which seemed to correct the problem. However the next morning I had to pump the dickins out of it to get her to start.now I just prime her 1st thing of a morning and she starts fine the rest of the day. Question: what did I do wrong, or what did I not do?
Sounds to me like it could be a choke problem. What you can do is pull the air cleaner lid when the motor is cold and open the throttle all the way and then release it and see if the choke plate is closing if it is not then it is probably the thermostatic spring on the carb. or a linkage problem. You didn't say what engine you had in the truck.
Hope this is some help. Mike
MIKE-H......I've got a sweet little 300-six cylinder in her. Thanks for your input. I'll go check that out right now. what else might it be if that's not it?
If that is not it then I will have to some more thinking on it. I also have a 300ci I-6 but I have the exact opposite problem. On mine the choke is not opening all the way and wants to flood out when warm. I believe the Problem you are having is related to the choke system. I assume that you have a Carter YF 1 bbl. Have fun and let me know about the choke closing so I know weather to think harder or not. Mike
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Mar-02 AT 10:18 PM (EST)]MIKE-H.........hi there all ford all the time. i would say you are right on the choke theory, i went out and checked it this morning while it was still cold. when i pushed on the throttle i got no butterfly action at all. i'll have to call auto parts tomarrow, as everything is closed here today & its been way too cold on this mountain to do much of anything today. but i'll let you know how it turns out.THANKS AGAIN.........MIKE..H
Mike: I checked out my choke again, and found I was missing both idle screws, so I'm thinking this is my prblem. I fooled around with it a few minutes and she fired right up. I've not replaced them as yet, but pretty sure that will solve the problem. There probably a dealer item that they don't have in stock.(LOL) I'll keep you informed. THANKS AGAIN......... Mike H.
