Hey i have a 1981 F100 and i have a horizontal crack along my frame close to the front of the cab. How long is this safe to drive around and is it worth fixing or getting new frame???
I don't think its worth the $$ to fix unless you just weld a plate over the crack on both sides, because a new frame is probqably worth more than the truck.
If it is not directly under a body mount I would not be concerned about any immedate danger. I would definately have it welded as soon as you can though. It should be a simple and relatively inexpensive job to fix as long as no fuel, break, or wire lines are directly in the way.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Mar-02 AT 09:17 PM (EST)]I dont reckon boltin a piece of metal will stop it. Like a windshield that gets a nick in it and spreads over time, the frame will do the same.I'd grind a vee groove in the metal right down the crack and fill it in with a 7018 welding rod. Do a few passes to make sure you got good coverage of the crack and surrounding metal. I did this on a spring hanger on a old belly dump 18 wheeler trailer and the weld is still holding today after about 6 months, also did it on a spring cap for a end dump trailer and it's still holdin up. don't worry about welding on the otehr side, if you do it right it will be stronger than the rest of the frame.
If you are going to repair it using any method, drill a hole at each end of the crack first. Where the metal is weakened and splitting at the crack it will just keep moving along the fault. Drilling a hole at the end stops it and usually will keep it from spreading.
