gonna jump on the satelite radio here pretty quick and cant decide between the two. they seem the same to me. most likely will replace head unit and get one that is ready for it. if i ran it to the auxilary in my existing i would just need the tuner, modulator and dock right? sirius is a little more money but, i dont have to sign a contract. any input on this??
BBJ-thaks for starting this thread. I am considering making the jump too, but haven't done any research. I am looking forward to hearing about other's experiences. My friend has Sirius and likes it. I'll email him to get his comments and post back tomorrow. I don't know anyone with XM.
I've been a subscriber to xm for about 14 months now. I liked it so much, I bought another roadie2 for the house. I live in a pretty rural area and do a lot of traveling for work, so I need to have the reliable signal of a satellite radio. In my area, there are an abundance of country stations (sorry, not a big fan) and spotty coverage of NPR, which I listen to the majority of the time. Plus, xm has all the major news stations; npr, cnn, msnbc, fox, headline news, bbc, etc... They also have a great unrated comedy channel that is just one standup comedian after another, all uncensored. xm has decent music stations, but I'm not a big music listener, mostly news, like I mentioned. I thought about getting a head unit for my truck, but I am on the road in my govt vehicle (Jeep Liberty) quite a bit, so I need something portable. I'm sure sirius is pretty similar to xm in most respects. Whichever one you get, I'm sure you will be pretty happy with it, especially if you have bad reception or travel a lot like I do.
BTW- Not trying to be an *** or anything, but does this topic offend some people who think it should be discussed in a different forum of the site? It doesn't bother me in the least, as I have posted questions in other places on this site, and didn't get nearly as many or as high of a quality response as I get on the powerstroke forum. In my opinion, the people who frequent the powerstroke forum are much friendlier, more tolerant of novice and/or repetitive questions and generally more enjoyable to talk to.
I have a sirius radio in my truck, and my uncle has xm in his house, there is not really much difference in the two that I can tell. We are both very happy with ours. If I was you, I would just shop around and see which you can get the best deal on. I think you would be equally happy with either one.
new to site as of today. saw your question and decided to throw in my .02.
I bought sirius over XM. The reason for me is the Football with the NFL and Big 12. It just depends on what you like. XM is big on NASCAR. If you like college football, check the web on which radio carries your conference. Each have different coverages. Most commerical drivers like XM for NASCAR. Bottom line is both offer basically same programs with exception of sports. MLB etc. etc.
If you dont like sports, go with the cheapest XM. You can buy sirius for a life time if you pay $500 before June 30, 2005. Thats to say they are always going to be in business. Well worth the 500 in my mind versus the approx 150 per year. hope this helps.
yeah i ask here, im one of the regulars. theres more knowlegeable guys here and with the PSD i think guys take more pride and workmanship in there truck for some reason. you dont bump into too many guys that have one of theese trucks that dosnt know anything about it.
so the sirius/xm is the same crap differnt smell pretty much??
I have XM in my truck and love it. I am a big NASCAR fan so I went with XM. I know that Sirius has all the NFL games. XM will carry all the MLB baseball games in the upcoming season. If I was you I would look at the program guides (you can get them online) and decide which one to go with based off of the channels. I believe the service is so similar you will never know the difference. Once you get the satelite radio you'll wonder how you lived without it.
Barry350, welcome and enjoy Palajoe is right, everybodyy here is really nice and will help with everyhting as much as they can.
as for XM or Sirius, my Kenwood deck is set up for Sirius, but my buddy just told me last ngiht that XM will work on it too, so time to head over to Best BUy to pick at the audio guys brains some. i'm startin to head towards satelite radio cause i'm gettin tired of carrying all my CD's, already had then stolen once, don't wanna again. that new XM unit looks pretty slick too, the portable one. so we'll see....i'm gonna try to get over to best buy in the next couple nights, hopefully the rodeo and Steve Miller will have me busy this evenin
im gonna get the portable clarion unit. it has the fm modulator in it so i can move it from truck to truck to the trailer, garage, barn, house. just gotta have the docking station for it. and its black and has the green lighting to match the truck....im gonna go sirius, im gonna get dish net and its the same programming on dishnet too. then i dont have to buy a head unit right now and have the portability.
You won't be sorry with Sirius! I love mine. I have the Sportster model and bring it with me from truck to truck. I usually just put the antenna on the dash board and it works just fine. It has the built in FM modulator as well.
From what I understand, XM is more driven to the older crowd and Sirius is for the younger crowd. Either way you'll never listen to regular FM ever again!
My 2 cents. I have had both. Only difference is programming package. Which has been mentioned several times. Sirrius has a better music selection package while XM is more talk, news, comedy etc. The best way to decide is to look at each website and check out their programming guides compare them to what you enjoy listening too. As far as signal strength, quality. They both are the same. I didnt have a contract with XM and I dont with Sirrius. Only thing I miss from XM is the Nascar channels. But I have TV in my truck so I watch rather then listen. Either way you cant go wrong they both are great! Enjoy!
For all you NASCAR fan Sirius just signed a contract to be the sole NASCAR satallite radio broadcaster in 2007. It was either a 5 or 7 year deal. It might make a difference to you.
