This forum is becoming addicting! Another question about my 1971 Sport Custom...The drivers side indoor door handle is disconnected from the the latching mechanism inside the door. I believe what connects the handle to the latch is a cable that must have snapped. I'm wondering where I could find a replacement part. All the catalogs (D. Carpenter, LMC, etc.) I've checked don't list anything for this. I posed this question on another 1967-1972 form, got one response saying he thought the part was a steel rod and the snap connector which attaches it to the handle must have broken and I would find this rod hanging inside the door if I removed the door panel.
Looking at the passenger door which is OK, it sure seems like the part in question is a cable. In any case, can someone tell me if this is a cable or a rod and where the correct part might be available? Thanks, everyone.
Thanks, but I'm still wondering if this part is a cable or a rod...I don't have time to scour the junkyards at present and would like to be able to order this part from somewhere. With all the 67-72 knowledge I've seen on this board it seems some kind forum member would be able to answer my question.
I was just in my door today and it has a rod with a plastic clip connector to the door handle. If you swing the door back and forth a little the rod will tap the inside panel, to make sure thats your problem. Nothing else should really be moving around inside the door. Its a basic design and lots of room to work in, so its not have a problem making this repair.
That is correct its a rod and your problem more than likely is the clip has broke or slipped off. Good Luck on finding your parts if I find a source for new ones I'll let you know.
