automatic shift kits?

Whats the deal with these AT shift kits?

I found that a lot of the time my tranny wont kick down when I want it to... Would a shift kit help with this?

How do I find out exactly what tranny I have?
1990 f150 4x4 5.0 L

Why are these kits so cheap? 50$ ? is there a lot of labor involved in the installation?

Shift kit/chip

The shift kit for my 7.5l F250 was about $65.00, not sure now and the Superchip was $279.00. A friend has a tuner and the net gain was 30 hp and 60 ftlb. torque. This was accomplished with no other modification. I had already done the K&N filter system prior to installation of the chip/shift kit. Brad (mechanic w/30 yrs Ford Truck experience and friend with tuner) advised that one without the other was okay, but should do both. I only use Extraguard Fram oil filter and Castrol oil with Slick 50 additive for high mileage engines. I haven't lifted the truck one inch and my tire upsizing is only to 285/75R16's. Brad installed the kit and chip and it was the best single upgrade I have ever done. He also did the same for my Bronco. I don't know if your issue is something a shift kit would address or if you have an E4od issue. I change my fluid/filter every 60,000 miles in the transmission and at 240,500 miles no problems as of yet. If you are mechanically inclined and have basic tools from what I saw (in the position of tool holder/fetcher) you should be able to do it.

you have to take off the trans oil pan...its like a set of gaskets that change the pressure or something somehow...they just make it shift faster(tighten up the lag time between shifts)

you could probably do it if you have ever changed trans fluid before and you know how to read..

also on my door post under trans is an E is this for the e40d trans 91 ford bronco 5.0

I put the truck on a dyno at a little place off Buford Highway (US23) in Suwanee before and after the mod. Brad took about 3 hours to complete the job as he and I also changed the trans. fluid and filter while in it.

I have done the kit my self. If you take your time, and do it in a clean are you will be fine. Also, when i first put mine in it shifted hard, realy hard, for a bout 100 miles. I called b+m about this, they said give it time to work in. But i loved it after that.

Have fun, and take your time.

If this is in fact an e-tranny, then your chip could be reprogrammed to increased the TV pressure to firm up the shifts and also change the shift points, and you wont have to drop the trans pan van valve body.

Blurry is correct, it can be re-programmed, we did the shift kit, chip, and programming. Money well spent.
