My van was replaced at work last year with a 2004 E350 with the 6.0 powerstroke, I was very impressed with the performance and not being able to afford a new pick-up I purchased a 96 F350 with the 7.3 (125K mi.) and so far have only had one problem, it will not start when its below 40. I have the new one to compare it to that starts @ below 0 temps. The only thing that seems different is that when I try the new one I can hear a clicking sound that must be the relay while the wait to start light is on. When I try the 96 I cannot hear any clicking sound while the light is on, should I? It seems that if it is the relay it would be a lot easier and less costly to just change it rather than get into the glowplugs. The truck starts when I plug it in no matter the temp. Thanks in advance for any info or advice.
check to see if your glow plugs are working because a couple that are bad can make a really hard start.....and i think if you hear a clicking that thats your relay, but there are others that know more about this than me
I hear a very audible click when the relay kicks on. An easy way to kindof check your relay is to watch your voltmeter on the dash. When the relay energizes your meter will dip way down and stay there. If its not dropping your relay isn't energizing. You can also test the voltage on the relay itself. If its working you should have voltage on both large terminals. If only one has voltage, bad GPR.
Good luck
Mike
