Abnormal engine noise?
I have an '03 PSD, engine built in May with C95 injectors. The truck runs great, with no apparent problems. It has never been reflashed, and I am going on 25K miles now.
I am concerned about a faint noise that the truck makes only under certain conditions. The noise is not very loud, and it sounds like a frozen pea rattling around in a mason jar. Kind of like mild octane knock in a gas motor. I only hear it in the rpm range of 2500 to 3000, under moderate acceleration. It almost sounds like it's coming from the dash, rather than from under the hood. It's almost more like a ticking sound.
Any ideas as to what this might be? The truck is rarely run hard - will a diesel build up carbon, etc, in the cylinders that must be blown out periodically (like a gas engine does)?
I'd like to get some advice on this before I spend time taking it in to the dealer for diagnosis. Thanks.
Doug
I wondered if it was a fuel problem or bearings on an idler in the serpentine belt. It has been hard to find it and I am not noticing any other abnormal driving issues.
