Source for Proportioning Valve??

I believe I have a bad proportioning valve. It won't center, so the brake light is always on and the front brakes work about half the time. I think the piston is sticking. I've tried Napa, several local auto parts places (Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Frederick Automotive) as well as the local Ford dealer. Nobody carries new proportioning valves, or any kind of rebuild kit.

Also, the valve is leaking fluid around the rear where some part of the valve screws into the main valve body. I'm sure this is part of the problem. I tried tightening it, but it's brass and has an O-Ring, so I'm afraid of really leaning on it. I tightened it to about 30-40 ft/lbs (no torque wrench, just guesstimating) and it still leaks slightly.

Any ideas how to rebuild it or where to get a new one?

Vehicle info;
1974 F250 Camper Special, 390 engine, power brakes, 2WD.

i had to get mine at salvage, im sure there are places to find remanufactured ones, but for the price and the trouble you can pick one up at salvage cheap and be on your way in no time. just be sure to take your old one to compare it with others.......

South Mountain Billy,
I too, have the same problem. No parts store carries these and they don't sell and overhaul kit. Buying it from the junk yard may be a temporary solution, but how can you be sure the one you are getting is any better than the one you remove?

I would like to take mine apart and replace the o-rings in it. But at this point I am causious about taking it apart just in case it doesn't want to go back together. At least now I can drive the truck eventhough it doesn't like to stop quickly. If this thing doesn't go back together, the truck is grounded until a replacement is found. Not a comfortable position to be in, especially during the Winter months.

Go to a salvage yard and get another valve. Tear that one down and clean it real well. They get gunked up around the sliding piston and not only won't they center, they restrict the flow of fluid which hampers brake operation. Before you tear it down, take a stiff wire wheel/brush to the exterior and really get it clean. The smallest piece of crap, inside the valve, when you put it back together will bind it up again.

auto krafters and LMC also carries them. You may be better off at a salvalge yard though. Those things run about 150-200 bucks from those sources!

You can buy adjustable (aftermarket) proportioning valves as well.

I bought mine from Ford, but that was 2 years ago. It was about $90. Have they been discontinued?

Do you know the cost of these from Master Power Brakes?
I did look these up in NPD. Their cost there is $140. I would think that since the cost is rather high, and the availability low, someone would have a rebuild kit or has developed a rebuild procedure.
Thanks,
John24255

I've been looking for the adjustable proportioning valves, but they're all one inlet one outlet, I need two inlets and three outlets. So far, the best source seems to be in line tubes, they have one for $90. But, for now, I got an O-Ring kit and am going to try rebuilding the valve. An suggestions? Someone has had to have done this before.

I pushed hard on my brakes, and my light went out for several days. Now, it's back on. Since the truck still stops, I believe I will wait for better weather before attempting the repair. I would hate to have my only 4-wheel drive vehicle down should we get a deep snow.

Like everyone else out there with the same problem, I was hoping that someone has already concurred this beast, and could share some insight. In the interim, I will be checking the junk yards for an extra one to play with. However, 1979's are not in abundance there. If I find one or change my mind about the starting the project, I will keep you informed of my results.

I have not heard from Highboy1975, to see how he got his from e-bay for $20.
