I have recently purchased a leftover 04 STX 150 Flairside 4x4. Looking at the tail-lights they are divided in basically three sections a red on the bottom, a clear/white for the backup light in the middle and another red section on top. All of my lights function, however, stop/direction/and running lights work only within the bottom red section. Is the top red section supposed to do something? even light up as a running light or is it there just for cosmetic purposes. These models are rare in my area I cannot easily make a comparison. I know that most of the other Ford models that have three sections, both red sections perform some sort of lighting. Forgive the pun but "Can someone shed some light on this for me" thanks in advance!
bobri...the upper half is just a reflector, no bulbs. The taillights come off real easy, just drop the gate and there's 2 each 8mm bolts holding them in.
Flaresides are a very rare breed, which I really like!!
BTW. one of the mods I want to do is make the clear portion the turn signal (using one of those those chrome-dome amber bulbs) and add better-quality reverse lights in the bumper. I think amber turn signals are best for safety purposes, and all the European guys are having to make this mod anyhow. I'm hoping to get it done and finally build my FTE website with step-by-step instructions and photos on this and other electrical mods I have in mind (a/c compressor cut out sw when in defrost, and high-output front amber lights to use as sort-of DRL's).
Is this the first flareside you gusy have owned?
I use to have an 84 F-150 that my dad and I restored the summer after I graduated high school. It originally had a regular shortbed but it ended up after the resto with a flareside bed and a stained oak floor. Looked absolutely awesome till after the first winter. The salt did a good number on it.
i just traded a 97 flairside larait 4x4 for a fx4 styleside 4x4 but only because they didnt have a flairside and i didnt want to wait.but flairsides rock imo...
I'm still trying to figure out why i went with a flarside, maybe cause it's purty.
On the other hand since I use the trailer more with a flareside bed I probably keep more scratches out of the truck itself this way. Then again my dog box fits in this bed and even though my birddogs more than make up for those scratches they will scratch anything somehow.
Thanks for information on the top section of the lights. You folks are right the flairsides are nice..been driving that style truck perhaps for longer than some of you are old...Just as a FYI got an extended warranty from Ford on the General tires yesterday up to 3 yr 36,000. Have a good day and enjoy your rides whatever style.
Has anyone found a set of aftermarket fender flares for their flareside truck? I have been looking but have been extremely unsuccesful in my hunt for them.
