I am going to attempt Ziggster's manual glow plug control modification tomorrow on my 1985 F-250 6.9L. But, before I begin, I need to know where the GPC is. Also, which battery is best to run the "hot" wire from?
The glow plug controller is in the back of the passenger side head.
But you do not need to do anything there.
The relay is where you need to make the changes. It is behind the passenger side battery. It has 4 terminals, two big ones with orange wires on them, two small ones , one that has a black wire on it (closer to the fender) and the other has a purple wire on it (closer to the motor).
Remove the purple wire and run a new wire to the inside of the cab to where you want to mount the momentary switch.
Use a circuit tester and turn the key to ON. Probe the fuses in the fuse panel and find one that is hot when the key is on an off when the key is off. That is where you want to get the power from for the momentary switch.
This way someone can not push the switch and burn your glow plugs up when the key is off.(Kids playing or something like that)
Since you are just triggering the relay it does not have to be a big wire that you run outside.
You are welcome. Look at the connector that is near your oil dip stick in the group of wires from the relay to the glow plugs. That connector is famous for overheating and not making good contact. Look most at the side that has the two large orange wires. I had to cut both wires on both sides of the connector and splice them back together several years ago. Mine had overheated when the controller died and turned the glow plugs on till they all fried while driving down the road one day. All the little wires go to the IP and guage sensors, they are usually fine as they are in the connector.
