I have a 94 Bronco stock and I am having trouble with my shifter on the column. The shifter seems to be getting loose and now I have to hold the handle towards park in order for the vehicle to start. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to fix the problem and is it a simple fix.
I also have a sloppy column shifter in my '94. I don't have the problem of having to hold the shifter in P to start, but it is sloppy and would like to avoid any future problems.
Lay down on the floorboard and look under the dash as you wiggle the shifter handle. You should be able to see where the cable is routed. As you wiggle it, look for broken metal or missing screws. That's the first thing I did.
I'm not sure if the cable has any adjustment to it. maybe someone else can chime in with that advise. My '92 had a sloppy shifter (I had to hold it in PARK sometimes to start it) but I just got it back from the transmission shop and they did something to it to get it tighter.
Did the same with mine. There is a plate that holds the shifter mechanism in place, and held by torx screws (T25 I believe) - at least on mine. They had backed out a bit, and tightening them up fixed the sloppiness in the shifter. Thanks for info.
I was having the same problem with the loose shifter on my 96 F-150. It had gotten to the point where I had to start my truck in neutral. I took 92EBnTX's advice to the others and looked under the dash. Both screws that hold the mounting plate on had backed out by about 3/8 inch. Very quick and easy fix, to a pain in the butt problem. Thanks a bunch 92EBnTX.
