Shocks on 2000 Explorer

How can I be certain that I need to front and rear shocks? The ride is definitely not as smooth and I can feel the bumps in the road a lot more. Also when I slow from fast speeds the steering wheel shakes a little. Is this indicative of bad front shocks?

One way to tell is to press firmly down on one corner of the explorer. The Exp ought to rebound quickly with little sway or 'aftershocks'. If you're a do-it yourselfer, shock replacment isn't too bad. I replaced the front and rear shocks on my '96 at about 105,000 miles and the ride improvement was remarkable. The symptoms you descrive could certainly be indicative worn shocks. i used Monroe Sensamatics.

I'm somehwhat of a do it myselfer but obviously that depends on how hard the job is. Know of any threads that give a play by play or is it just disassemble, replace and reassemble?

One resource we frequently overlook is the local public library. They should as a minimum have the Chilton's book for your vehicle. I checked out Chilton's, replaced the shocks, and took the book back the same day. If you don't have a library card, copy the few pages you need and take them with you.
